Four Mavericks Named All-Conference; Vruno Rookie of the Year

Burnsville, Minn. — The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference officials have announced that MSU-Mankato 133-lb freshman Alphonso Vruno has been named the 2012-13 NSIC Rookie of the Year. Vruno was also named to the NSIC All-Conference Second Team. Joining Vruno as all-conference selections is sophomore Cody Quinn, junior David Demo and senior Aaron Norgren. Quinn was named to the first team, while Demo and Norgren were second-team honorees.

MSU-Mankato MavericksVruno compiled a 37-8 record en route to a third-place finish at the NCAA National Championships. In doing so, the Sandwich, Ill., native earned All-American honors. Included in Vruno’s 37 wins was a 16-match winning streak to begin his collegiate career. Of Vruno’s eight losses, four were to Division I opponents, while the other four came to national champions or national runner-ups.

Quinn earned his second-consecutive All-American award with a third-place finish at the national championship. Quinn went 5-1, including three pins and two major decisions. With his three pins in 5:21, Quinn earned the Gorriaran Award at the championship for recording the most falls in the shortest cumulative time. The Covington, Wash., native won Super Region 3 with a 4-0 record. Quinn finished with a 27-8 record and went 7-1 in NSIC action.

Norgren qualified for nationals for the fourth-consecutive year with a second-place finish at Super Region 3. After redshirting last season, Norgren compiled a 14-9 senior campaign, including a 4-2 conference record.

Demo qualified for his second-straight national championship, where he defeated defending champion Kyle McCrite (Grand Canyon) 5-0 in the opening match. Demo finished the year 24-13, including a 7-1 NSIC record.

The NSIC recognizes the highest-place winner at the NCAA Regional Tournament from each weight class as all-conference first team. Any wrestler that earns NCAA All-American honors is recognized as a second team all-conference selection, along with the runner up at the regional.
