BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Augustana’s Jayd Docken went 2-0 on the first day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships and advanced the semifinals of the 197-pound bracket on Friday in Birmingham, Ala.
Nate Herda, wrestling at 149 pounds for the Vikings, went 1-2 on Friday and saw his season come to an end. Herda earned All-America status as a redshirt freshman and as a sophomore and finishes his career with an outstanding record of 134-36 at Augustana.
Herda started the day taking on the defending national champion at 149 pounds, Raufeon Stots of Nebraska-Kearney, and lost a tight 3-2 decision. The senior bounced back with a 12-4 major decision over Kutztown’s Mitch Voelker to advance in the consolation bracket.
Herda saw his run at the NCAA Championships come to an end in a 3-2 loss to Deral Brown of Newberry.
Docken got things going with a 3-1 overtime decision win over Ashland University’s Joseph Brandt to move in to the quarterfinal round of the championship bracket at 197 pounds. The sophomore then earned a 5-0 decision over Kutztown’s Vinny Campanile to advance to the semifinals.
Docken will wrestle Romero Cotton from Nebraksa-Kearney on Saturday as he looks to advance to the 197-pound championship bout.
