The 2013 edition of The Guillotine Academic All-State honorees features 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third-team members, and 41 honorable mention wrestlers.

Wrestlers were submitted on nomination forms signed by a coach and school administrator verifying their current GPA (minimum of 3.0), number of current season varsity matches wrestled (minimum of fifteen), current season win percentage (minimum of 60%) and grade (junior or senior).
Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, current state tournament placement and cumulative high school GPA. Each of the first team wrestlers will receive two certificates and a letter of recognition.
This year’s top Academic All-State wrestler spot goes to senior Mahnomen/Waubun wrestler Garret Hoffner. Garret capped his high school career with the Class A 152-pound state title, a perfect 45-0 record, and a 3.96 GPA.
Not far behind Hoffner is senior Adam Cooling of Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther and senior Kyle Gliva of Simley.
Everyone on the first team placed fourth or higher at state this year, including ten champions and eight runners-up. First team members have an average of forty season wins, an average season win percentage of 92%, and an average GPA of 3.85.
Eleven nominees had a perfect 4.0 GPA: Will Balow of Lake City, Blake Bergeron of Crookston, Luke Boran of Brainerd/Pillager, Kyle Drehmel of Goodhue, Carter Hanson of Blue Earth Area, Tyler Keller of Medford, Drey Loge of Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus, Eric Madson of Hutchinson/Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart, Noah Pehrson of Trinity at River Ridge, Josh Stuehrenberg of Breckenridge/Campbell-Tintah, and Christopher Zimmer of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis.
Four nominees finished as undefeated 2013 state champions and all four made our first team: Lance Briard of River Valley, Adam Cooling of Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther, Garret Hoffner of Mahnomen/Waubun, and Nick Wanzek of Simley.
Repeat Guillotine first-team members are Adam Cooling of Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther, Kyle Gliva of Simley, Tyler Jakes of Mankato West, Lincoln Mallinger of Saint Michael-Albertville, Tristan Manderfeld of Foley, Chase Morlock of Moorhead, and Nick Wanzek of Simley.
Foley had the most first, second, and third-team members with four.
Eight teams had three first, second, and third-team members: Blue Earth Area, Chatfield, Moorhead, Mound-Westonka, New London-Spicer, Pierz, Saint Michael-Albertville, and Simley.

The Guillotine 2013 Academic All-State Wrestlers – First Team

Garret Hoffner, 152 lbs.
Mahnomen/Waubun, 12th
Garret is a six-time state entrant and three-time state placer. He won the 152 pound Class A title this year, placed sixth at 145 pounds as a junior, and fifth at 140 pounds as a sophomore. Garret finished his season undefeated with 45 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 218-32. Garret’s GPA is 3.96. Honors and achievements include two-time MWCA Academic All-State, three-time team captain, 2012 Junior National Duals Greco All-Tournament Team, 2012 Junior freestyle state champion, and two-time Big Bear Tournament champion. Future plans are to wrestle at MSU-Moorhead and major in Health Service Administration. Garret’s parents are Brent and Peggy and his coach is his father.

Adam Cooling, 160 lbs.
Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther, 12th
Adam is a two-time state champion, a three-time placewinner, and a five-time state entrant. He won the 160-pound Class A title this year and the 145-pound title as a junior. Adam also placed fourth at 140 pounds as a sophomore. Adam finished his season undefeated with 44 wins. He ended his HS career with a record of 201-40. Adam’s GPA is 3.92. Honors and achievements include two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2013 MWCA Scholarship recipient, 2012 Guillotine Academic All-State, three-time NHSCA Nationals All-American, and ranks #1 in his HS class. Adam is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at MSU-Mankato and pursue a career in sports medicine and physical therapy. Adam’s parents are Mark and Kim and his coach is Darren Gifferson.

Kyle Gliva, 132 lbs.
Simley, 12th
Kyle is a three-time state champion and a four-time finalist. He won the 132-pound Class AA title this year, the 113-pound title as a junior, and the 106-pound title as a sophomore. Kyle was also runner-up at 103 pounds as a freshman. Kyle had a season record of 44-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 165-17 (90.7 win %). Kyle’s GPA is 3.89. Honors and achievements include Cadet freestyle nationals third place and Cadet folkstyle nationals runner-up. Kyle is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at North Dakota State and pursue an engineering career. Kyle’s parents are Keith and Sue and his coach is Will Short.

Lance Briard, 285 lbs.
River Valley, 12th
Lance is a two-time state entrant winning the heavyweight Class A title this year. He placed fifth at 285 pounds as a junior. Lance finished his season undefeated with 37 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 97-18. Lance’s GPA is 3.93. Honors and achievements include two-time team captain, 2013 MWCA Academic All-State and Scholarship recipient, two-time all-conference, 2012 Vikings All-State football team. He is also involved in Track, FFA, Choir, and Plays. Lance is a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle and play football at Augustana and study Exercise Science. Lance’s parents are Jeff and Maren and his coach is Todd Bertram.

Nick Wanzek, 170 lbs.
Simley, 12th
Nick is a three-time state champion and a four-time finalist. He won the 170-pound Class AA title this year, the 152-pound title as a junior, and the 145-pound title as a sophomore. Nick was also runner-up at 145 pounds as a freshman. Nick finished his season undefeated with 48 wins. He ended his high school career with a record of 222-30. Nick’s GPA is 3.81. Honors and achievements include 2013 MWCA Academic All-State, Junior freestyle nationals runner-up, and Junior folkstyle national champion. Future plans are to wrestle at the University of Minnesota. Nick’s parents are Tim and Susan and his coach is Will Short.

Nate Thomas, 126 lbs.
Kasson-Mantorville, 12th
Nate is a two-time state champion and a three-time finalist. He won the 126-pound Class AA title this year and the 103-pound title as a freshman. Nate also placed second at 112 pounds as a sophomore. An injury sidelined him his junior year. Nate had a season record of 46-3. He ended his HS career with a record of 138-16. Nate’s GPA is 3.83. Honors and achievements include two-time Fargo All-American, Triple Crown winner, 2013 MWCA Academic All-State, and two-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion. Future plans are to win an NCAA championship for the Univ. of Minnesota and become a World and Olympic champion. Nate is interested in becoming a psychologist, college wrestling coach, and CIA agent. Nate’s parents are Ryan Thomas and Andrea Dever and his coaches are Jamie Heidt and Paul Mann.

Will Balow, 182 lbs.
Lake City, 11th
Will is a three-time state entrant winning the 182-pound Class A title this year. He placed fifth at 160 pounds as a sophomore. Will had an impressive season record of 27-2. His current career record is 133-38. Will’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include two-time team captain, two-time all-conference, ranks #1 in his HS class, ExCel Award winner, 2012 All-Section football first team, and 2012 Honorable Mention All-State football. Will is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are undecided for now but might include wrestling or football. Will’s parents are Tom and Dawn and his coach is Lonnie West.

Chase Morlock, 195 lbs.
Moorhead, 12th
Chase is a four-time state entrant winning the 182-pound Class AAA title as a junior. He placed second at 195 pounds as a senior and fourth at 160 pounds as a sophomore. Chase had an impressive season record of 44-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 167-31. Chase’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include 2013 MWCA Academic All-State, 2013 Class AAA All-Tournament Team, wrestling and football captain, Mr. Football finalist, and Vikings All-State football team. Future plans are to play football at NDSU and study business and exercise science. Chase’s parents are Paul and Jean and his coach is Skip Toops.

Justin Herold-Plakut, 152 lbs.
Woodbury, 11th
Justin is a four-time state entrant placing third at 152 pounds this year in Class AAA. He also placed fifth at 132 pounds as a sophomore. Justin had a season record of 46-4. His current career record is 172-45. Justin’s GPA is 3.99. Honors and achievements include two-time team captain, Section 4AAA Academic Team member, team record for wins (46), two-time team MVP, part of first wrestling team in school history to qualify for the state tournament (2013), and two-time Rumble on the Red Tournament placer. Future plans are to be a state champion, wrestle for an Ivy League school and major in mechanical engineering. Justin’s parents are Marvin Plakut and Darvia Herold and his coach is Justin Smith.

Lincoln Mallinger, 145 lbs.
Saint Michael-Albertville, 12th
Lincoln is a three-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class AAA 145-pound runner-up this year. He placed third at 138 pounds as a junior. Lincoln had a season record of 38-11. He ended his high school career with a record of 137-48. Lincoln’s GPA is 3.91. Honors and achievements include three-time Mississippi 8 All-Conference and four-time all-conference academic, four-time Minnesota Christmas Tournament placewinner, and 2011 Cadet folkstyle All-American. Lincoln is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at West Point Military Academy. Lincoln’s parents are Tony and Kelly and his coach is Dan Lefebvre.

Christopher Pfarr, 152 lbs.
LeSueur-Henderson, 12th
Christopher is a three-time state entrant placing third at 152 pounds this year in Class A. He also placed sixth at 152 pounds as a junior and sixth at 125 pounds as a sophomore. Christopher had a season record of 39-4. He ended his high school career with a record of 146-59. Christopher’s GPA is 3.99. Honors and achievements include two-time all-conference, all-conference football, Most Valuable Defensive Player football, baseball captain, and KNUJ Wrestler of the Week. Future plans are to attend the University of Minnesota and pursue an agriculture degree. Christopher’s parents are David and Robyn and his coach is Scott Wilson.

Brian Bertram, 182 lbs.
Byron, 11th
Brian placed third at state this year at 182 pounds in Class AA. It was his first state tournament appearance. Brian had a season record of 39-7. His current career record is 98-46. Brian’s GPA is 3.99. Honors and achievements include 2012 and 2013 all-conference, 2011 academic all-conference, Rumble on the Red Tournament fifth place, and academic letterwinner 2011 and 2012. Future plans are to pursue a state title in 2014 and major in biomedical engineering or software engineering in college. Brian’s parents are Doug and Lisa and his coach is Ryan Radke.

Dustin Weinmann, 126 lbs.
Irondale, 12th
Dustin won the Class AAA title this year at 126 pounds. He is a four-time state entrant placing fifth at 112 pounds as a sophomore. Dustin had an impressive season record of 42-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 137-25. Dustin’s GPA is 3.64. Honors and achievements include “A” Honor Roll 2009-2013, Spotlight on Scholarship Award 2009-2013, academic all-conference 2012-2013, four-time all-conference, and two year football letterwinner. Dustin is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend UW-LaCrosse to wrestle, kick for the football team, and major in computer science. Dustin’s parents are Craig and Dianne and his coach is Ben Kissling.

Mack Short, 145 lbs.
Simley, 11th
Mack is a three-time state entrant and two-time placewinner. He was the Class AA 145-pound runner-up this year. He placed fourth at 135 pounds as a junior. Mack had a season record of 44-5. His current career record is 119-30. Mack’s GPA is 3.81. Honors and achievements include 2012 Cadet freestyle nationals All-American, two year football letterwinner, and baseball letterwinner. Future plans are undecided. Mack’s parents are Chris and Bobbie and his coach is Will Short.

Harvey Friederichs, 132 lbs.
Chatfield, 11th
Harvey was the Class A 132-pound state runner-up this year. It was his first state tournament appearance. Harvey claims a season record of 46-4. His current career record is an outstanding 140-36. Harvey’s GPA is 3.77. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference for wrestling and three-time academic all-conference. Future plans are to wrestle in college and major in business. Harvey’s parents are Andy and Kari and his coach is Joel Viss.

Skyler Petry, 113 lbs.
WEM/JWP, 11th
Skyler is a three-time state entrant and three-time placewinner. He was the Class AA 106-pound runner-up as a sophomore. He placed third at 113 pounds as a junior and fifth at 103 pounds as a freshman. Skyler had an impressive season record of 41-1. His current career record is 153-17 (90 win %). Skyler’s GPA is 3.91. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, two-year team captain, and MWCA Academic All-State. Skyler is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at the Division I level. Skyler’s parents are Todd and Amy and his coaches are Troy Stehr and Adam Roesler.

Tyler Jakes, 195 lbs.
Mankato West, 12th
Tyler is a three-time state entrant placing third at 195 pounds this year in Class AA. He placed fifth at 182 pounds as a junior. Tyler had an impressive season record of 37-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 174-59. Tyler’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include two-time MWCA Academic All-State, 2012 Guillotine Academic All-State first team, three-year team captain, four-time all-conference, NHSCA Nationals All-American, and class vice-president. Tyler is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to play football at Gustavus Adolphus College. Tyler’s parents are Paul and Lori and his coach is Dustin Buttell.

Tyler Keller, 126 lbs.
Medford, 11th
Tyler is a five-time state entrant placing third at 126 pounds this year in Class A. He placed fourth at 113 pounds as a junior, and fifth at 103 pounds as a sophomore. Tyler had a season record of 30-6. His current career record is 122-45. Tyler’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include ranking #1 in his HS class, Spotlight on Scholarship Gold Award 2010-2012, two-time all-conference, academic all-conference, and state student council executive board member. Tyler is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend a four-year college. Tyler’s parents are Terry and Sherry and his coach is Dennis Whitman.

Kysten Zierke, 195 lbs.
Blue Earth Area, 11th
Kysten was the Class A 195-pound runner-up this year at the state tournament. He is a two-time state entrant. Kysten had an impressive season record of 28-2. His current career record is 76-33. Kysten’s GPA is 3.9. Honors and achievements include two-time conference champion, three year letterwinner, member of two MWCA academic team state champions, all-conference football, member of AAA state championship team (QB, LB), Peer Helping, and DARE. Kysten is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are undecided but include football. Kysten’s parents are Greg Zierke and Shanlee Speeter and his coach is Randy Wirtjes.

Drey Loge, 145 lbs.
Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus, 12th
Drey is a two-time state entrant placing fourth at 145 pounds this year in Class AA. Drey had a season record of 42-3. He ended his HS career with a record of 142-53. Drey’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include 2012 Guillotine Academic All-State 2nd Team, three-time conference academic all-star wrestler, 2013 Mid-State Conference Most Valuable Wrestler, three-year team captain, 2012 MN football individual academic all-state, two-time Business Professionals of America state participant, and first robotics team. Drey is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend the University of Minnesota-Duluth to pursue a degree in engineering. Drey’s parents are Eric and Kathy and his coach is Travis Hoffarth.

Nick is a four-time state entrant and three-time placewinner. He was the Class AAA 126-pound runner-up this year. He placed sixth at 112 pounds as a sophomore and sixth at 112 pounds as a freshman. Nick had a season record of 39-7. His current career record is 156-37. Nick’s GPA is 3.72. Honors and achievements include four-time all-conference, team captain, four times voted most dedicated, 2011 Cadet folkstyle state champion, and two year soccer letterwinner. Nick is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to wrestle at a four year college and study engineering. Nick’s parents are John and Karin and his coach is Tim Hartung.

Luke Zilverberg, 138 lbs.

Luke is a two-time state entrant placing third at 138 pounds this year in Class AA. He placed fifth at 112 pounds as a sophomore. Luke had a season record of 42-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 135-30. Luke’s GPA is 3.76. Honors and achievements include four-time Rumble on the Red Tournament placewinner, 2012-13 Minnesota River Conference Most Valuable Wrestler, and Academic Achievement Award 2010-2012. Future plans are to wrestle at South Dakota State and study wildlife biology. Luke’s parents are Dan and Kim and his coaches are Darren Ripley and Jerold Stauffacher.

Kyle Drehmel, 126 lbs.
Goodhue, 12th
Kyle placed fourth at state this year at 126 pounds in Class A. It was his first state tournament appearance. Kyle had a season record of 38-8. He ended his high school career with a record of 147-55. Kyle’s GPA is 4.0. Honors and achievements include three-time Hiawatha Valley League All-Conference, two-year team captain, team Hardest Worker Award – 4 years, team Co-MVP – 2 years, President’s Award for Educational Excellence, and Goodhue High School AAA
Award nominee. Kyle is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to attend Drake University for Pharmacy. Kyle’s parents are Bob and Rose and his coach is Josh Grant.

Colin Fisher, 285 lbs.
Eagan, 12th
Colin is a two-time state entrant winning the heavyweight Class AAA title this year. He placed 5th at 285 pounds as a junior. Colin had an impressive season record of 40-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 73-9. Colin’s GPA is 3.48. Honors and achievements include becoming Eagan’s first state champion, two-time all-conference, two-year team captain, football team captain, and football all-conference honorable mention. Future plans are to play football and wrestle at Augustana or St. John’s. Colin’s parents are Matt and Anne and his coach is Chad Gage.

Holden Nelson, 160 lbs.
Thief River Falls/Goodridge, 12th
Holden is a three-time state entrant placing fourth at 160 pounds this year in Class AA. Holden had a season record of 39-5. He ended his high school career with a record of 158-53. Holden’s GPA is 3.96. Honors and achievements include two-year team captain, football all-conference, baseball all-conference honorable mention, and chamber orchestra member. Future plans are to attend the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Holden’s parents are Chad and Janelle and his coach is Kenny Geiser.

Gannon Volk, 120 lbs.
Apple Valley, 11th
Gannon was the Class AAA 120-pound runner-up this year. It was his first individual state tournament appearance. Gannon had a season record of 39-10. His current career record is 74-14. Gannon’s GPA is 3.65. Honors and achievements include National Cadet Triple Crown winner, Junior Greco-Roman All-American, Minnesota Christmas Tournament champion, Cadet World Team member, Section all-academic team, and five-time Fargo All-American (two-time champ). Future plans are to wrestle in college and study science. Gannon’s parents are Jennifer and Randy and his coach is Dalen Wasmund.

Mitchell Hartwig, 145 lbs.
Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie, 12th
Mitchell won the Class AA title this year at 145 pounds. He is a two-time state entrant. Mitchell had an impressive season record of 42-2. He ended his high school career with a record of 150-44. Mitchell’s GPA is 3.4. Honors and achievements include three-time all-conference, KDUZ Radio All-Area Wrestling Team 2013, Minnesota Mat Rats Team of the Year 2013, KNUJ Radio Wrestler of the Week, and three-year team captain. Future plans are to wrestle at Minnesota State University Mankato and major in geology. Mitchell’s parents are Greg and Sue and his coach is Lance Wurm.

Tristan Manderfeld, 126 lbs.
Foley, 12th
Tristan is a three-time state entrant placing fourth at 126 pounds this year in Class AA. He placed third at 113 pounds as a junior and third at 103 pounds as a sophomore. Tristan had a season record of 38-6. He ended his high school career with a record of 129-13 (90.8 win %). Tristan’s GPA is 3.93. Honors and achievements include Cadet FILA and Cadet Greco Nationals finalist, two-time MWCA Academic All-State, and FLOnationals fifth place. Future plans are to attend West Point for engineering and become a helicopter pilot. Tristan’s parents are Tom and Denise and his coach is Lyle Freudenberg.

Niko Anderson, 170 lbs.

Niko was the Class A 170-pound runner-up this year. It was his first state tournament appearance. Niko had an impressive season record of 37-2. His current career record is 90-43. Niko’s GPA is 3.63. Niko is a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to study physical therapy or sports medicine and play football or possibly wrestle in college. Niko’s parents are Tim and Lori and his coach is Jim Love.

Ethan Loosbrock, 170 lbs.
Chaska, 12th
Ethan is a three-time state entrant placing fourth at 170 pounds this year in Class AAA. He placed sixth at 145 pounds as a junior. Ethan had a season record of 33-4. He ended his HS career with a record of 146-48. Ethan’s GPA is 3.94. Honors and achievements include all-conference, two-year team captain, Rumble on the Red Tournament runner-up, two-time team MVP, football all-conference, football captain, Chaska MSHSL Triple A Award, and Chaska ExCel Award winner. Ethan is also a member of the National Honor Society. Future plans are to work toward an environmental/chemical engineering degree. Universities he is considering are Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. Ethan’s parents are Kelly and Holly and his coaches are Brent Eidenschink and Mike Schultz.
