Husky Wrestler Strikes Gold in Chile

St. Cloud State University wrestler Caleb White (Neola, Iowa) posted two impressive performances in action at the 2013 Pan America Junior Wrestling Championships in Santiago, Chile on July 13-14.

White brought home a gold medal with a first place finish at the Pan America Junior Freestyle Wrestling Championships at 120 kg (264.5 lbs). He also added a silver medal in the Pan America Junior Greco Roman Wrestling championships at 120 kg (264.5 lbs).

SCSU HuskiesWhite was one of four USA wrestlers to bring home gold medals from the Freestyle tournament. As a team, the United State placed first followed by Venezuela in second and Canada in third place. In the Greco Roman tournament, Team USA placed second behind Venezuela. Peru placed third in the team standings.

A sophomore for the Huskies, White opened the Greco Roman tournament with a 6-0 win over Moises Perez of Venezuela. In the title bout, White grabbed the silver medal with a 7-3 loss to Ramilo Paz of Brazil.

In the Freestyle tournament’s championship bout at 120 kg, White brought home the gold with a fall against Oscar Marin of Venezuela.

This international tournament was sanctioned by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles and hosted by the Chilean National Sport Federation of Olympic Wrestling.

White qualified for the tournament on the strength of his performance at the 2013 FILA Junior U.S. Open in Las Vegas, Nev. during the month of April. White earned All-America status in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman brackets and finished fourth at the Las Vegas tournament in the Greco-Roman competition.

A 2011 graduate of Tri-Center High School and resident of Neola, Iowa, White completed his second season with the Huskies in 2012-13. He charted a 12-6 overall record for the Huskies at 285-pounds this winter, which included tournament championships at the Cobber Open and the RCC Open.
