SCSU Gains Number Four Preseason Ranking

St. Cloud State University has gained a number four ranking in the 2013-14 NCAA DIvision II preseason, which was released on Oct. 23 by the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.

The Huskies gained 138 points in the poll, while Notre Dame (Ohio) led the poll with 156 points and two-time defending NCAA champ Nebraska-Kearney was ranked second with 151 points. Central Oklahoma ranked third in the poll with 145 points.

SCSU HuskiesOf note, the Huskies placed second in the nation at the 2013 NCAA Division II championships and they have also earned the runner-up postion at the NCAA championships in 2012 and 2011.

Notre Dame (Ohio) finished third at the 2013 championships and Central Oklahoma was fourth behind the Huskies. The top 10 in this year’s preseason poll was completed by Newberry (128), Adams State (120), Upper Iowa (107), Pittsburgh-Johnstown (99), Ouachita Baptist (88) and Indianapolis (88).

NSIC rival Minnesota State, Mankato received an 11th place ranking with 82 points.

Individually, SCSU senior Andy Pokorny was ranked second in the nation at 133-pounds in the preseason poll, while sophomore Matt Nelson gained a fourth place ranking at 141-pounds. At 157-pounds, SCSU sophomore Clint Poster was tabbed at third in the poll while teammate sophomore Gabe Fogarty gained a fifth place preseason ranking at 165-pounds.

Pokorny is a two-time SCSU All-American, while Nelson, Poster and Fogarty all earned All-America status for the first time in 2013.

The Huskies will enter the 2013-14 season with an impressive 47 dual match winning streak after posting perfect records over the last two seasons at 21-0. The last time SCSU lost a match was on Jan. 27, 2011 against Augustana. SCSU currently shares the all-time NCAA DIvision II win streak record with Pittsburgh-Johnstown with 47 wins.

The Huskies will open their season on Nov. 8 with the Black/Red Classic intrasquad meet followed by the regular season home opener against St. John’s University on Dec. 5. SCSU will also host the annual Holiday Inn/Husky Open on Dec. 14 in Halenbeck Hall.

The 2014 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships will be held March 14-15 in Cleveland, Ohio.
