Three Augustana wrestlers go undefeated as Vikings notch two wins at quadrangular

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana posted a 2-1 record on Friday when they hosted Morningside, Chadron State and the U.S. Air Force Academy in a quadrangular. The Vikings defeated Morningside 19-15 and Chadron State 30-18 before dropping their first bout of the year to Air Force, 30-13.

TJ North, Shawn Hatlestad, and Sean Derry each posted 3-0 records as the Vikings opened their dual season with a 2-1 record.

Augustana 19, Morningside 15

North (125 pounds) jumped all over Morningside’s Brent Curtis early, grabbing a 6-0 lead after two periods with three takedowns. North went on to win by major decision, 14-2, to give Augustana a 4-0 lead over the Mustangs.

Augustana VikingsMorningside answered in the 133-pound bout with Carter Tegeler defeating Augustana’s Blake Jans to make it a 4-3 match. The Vikings got back on track with a come-from-behind win by Brandon Charbonneau at 141 pounds.

Charbonneau trailed 6-4 as time was winding down in the third period when he got a takedown of Morningside’s Garret Lambrecht and had a one-point advantage with riding time to take the 7-6 decision and give Augustana a 7-3 lead.

Augustana pushed its lead to 10-3 after Hatlestad (149 pounds) won a 3-1 decision over Tyler Lashbrook. Morningside won the 157-pound bout with Jordan Langley of Morningside winning a 12-9 decision over Augustana’s Mitch Rechtzigel to make it a 10-6 match.

The Vikings responded with Parker Swanson (165 pounds) winning an 8-4 decision over Malcolm Johnson giving Augustana a 13-6 lead. The Mustangs got within four points at 13-9 after Trew Bushhousen won a 3-1 overtime decision over Jeff Nielsen at 174 pounds.

Derry came out strong against Rulin Pederson in the 184-pound bout and won a 10-4 decision to put the Vikings back up by seven at 16-9 with two more weight classes to go. Drake Fanslau got a late takedown of Jared McCoy in the third period to win a 4-3 decision and give Augustana a 19-6 lead heading into the heavyweight bout.

The Mustangs’ Tyler Kacmarynski pinned Augustana’s Michael Lowman in 6:07 in the 285-pound bout and the Vikings earned a 19-15 win over the Mustangs.

Augustana 30, Chadron State 18

Again, North opened the scoring for the Vikings with a major decision, this time taking down CSC’s 125-pounder Taylor Summers 10-1, giving Augustana a 4-0 lead. The Eagles answered with nationally-ranked Dustin Stodola pinning Jans in the 133-pound bout in 1:46.

Seizing the lead, redshirt freshman Jacob Anderson (141 pounds) pinned Chadron State’s Jay Stine early in the second round. Anderson earned six points for the Vikings with a fall 24 seconds into the second round and put Augustana up 10-6.

Hatlestad earned his first fall of the year by pinning Chadron State’s 149-pounder Jacob Anderson in 5:35. Augustana’s sophomore was down 6-4 entering the third round, but took the bout with a pin.

Rechtizigel’s win by forfeit gave the Vikings a 22-6 lead before Swanson shut out his opponent at 165 pounds and earned an 8-0 major decision victory. A three-point nearfall gave Swanson a 7-0 lead and the riding time he had accrued earned Swanson his first major decision of the season.

Chadron State earned back three points when Dylan Fors notched a takedown of Fanslau (174 pounds) with just 22 seconds left in regulation for a 3-1 win. Derry earned those points back with a 12-4 major decision at 184 pounds. Derry racked up five takedowns and an escape on top of riding time to earn the four-point victory, putting the Vikings up 30-9.

Nielsen, wrestling at 197 pounds lost by a 5-2 decision and Lowman was forced to default due to injury, giving Chadron State nine points, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings would take the second dual of the day 30-18.

Air Force 30, Augustana 13

For the third time on Friday, North gave the Vikings a 4-0 lead with a major decision, this time taking down Air Force’s Cassidy Oshida 14-4 in the opening bout. North’s five takedowns, one escape, and riding time point earned him his third major decision of the day.

The Vikings’ 133-pound struggles continued with Brandon Chesnut getting pinned in the first round. David Walker edged Anderson in the 141-pound bout 3-2 putting the Vikings down 9-4 after three bouts. A late takedown was escaped by Anderson but the redshirt freshman couldn’t score in the waning second of the match as he suffered his first defeat of the day.

Hatlestad and Rechtzingel gave the Vikings a brief lead at 10-9 with a pair of decisions. Hatlestad’s takedown with 15 seconds left in the bout broke a 1-1 ties and gave the Vikings some momentum. Rechtzingel dominated his 157-pound bout, narrowly missing a major decision as he blanked his AFA opponent 7-0 for the decision.

Back-to-back pins by the Falcons gave them a 21-10 lead entering the 184-pound match in which Derry would notch his third win of the day. Derry appeared on track for his second major decision of the day, but AFA’s Scott Reilly takedown in the last minute erased Derry’s lead and the senior won the 11-5 decision.

The Falcons added three more points on a 6-1 decision at 197 pounds and finalized their scoring after the Vikings left the 285-pound class open, handing the Vikings a 30-13 defeat.

The Vikings return to the mat at the Dakota Wesleyan open tomorrow in Mitchell, S.D.
