Drexel 26, South Dakota State 10

South Dakota State fell 26-10 in its home opener Saturday morning in Frost Arena. SDSU picked up three individuals wins in the dual that started at 157 pounds.

SDSU JackrabbitsAfter dropping the 157-pound bout, SDSU picked up back-to-back decision wins by junior Joe Brewster and freshman Brady Ayers. Brewster defeated Drexel’s Jason Fugiel 8-6, while Ayers defeated Kevin Matyas 3-1. Brewster took a lead into the third period, before Fugiel fought back, but Brewster’s reversal at 6:46 sealed the win. In his first official match as a Jackrabbit, Ayers recorded a takedown at 1:43 in the first and used riding time to take the bout, 3-1.

SDSU would not win again until the 149-pound finale when redshirt freshman Alex Kocer tallied a 14-3 major decision win over Drexel’s Shane Fenningham.

“We just didn’t bring it today,” head coach Chris Bono said. “We have a lot of work to do moving forward. We are excited to get back into the wrestling room and get ready for the Cyclone Open next weekend.”

SDSU will make the trek to Ames, Iowa next weekend to compete in the Cyclone Open. Action is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
