South Dakota State head coach Chris Bono has announced that five prep student-athletes have signed their National Letter of Intent to attend SDSU.
“We are excited about this class and are anxious to get them here,” Bono said. “This group of guys will compliment our current team extremely well. This is a great group of guys that will play a key role in helping us continue to make the transition of becoming a nationally-recognized program.”
2014-15 Jackrabbit Wrestling Signees:
Josh Casperson – Beresford, S.D./Beresford HS
Spencer Derifield – Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS
Logan Peterson – Lake Lillian, Minn./Atwater-Cosmos-grove City HS
Quinn Smith – Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge HS
Kaleb Staack – Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock HS
Casperson, a Beresford, S.D., native, is coming off of a 182-pound state championship last season. Casperson, who was also a standout in football, is expected to wrestle at 184 pounds for the Jackrabbits.
Derifield won the 2013 3A 152-pound Iowa State High School Championship. A three-time state qualifier and two-time state medalist, Derifield, owns a 117-36 career mark entering his senior campaign. Ranked No. 10 amongst all 160 pounders, he was also the 2013 Preseason Nationals runner-up at 160 pounds.
Peterson, who is expected to compete at 165 or 174 pounds for SDSU, is a two-time Minnesota state placewinner, placing third in both 2012 and 2013. Peterson boasts a 154-30 record for Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City entering his senior year. He also earned All-American honors at the 2013 USA Wrestling Folkstyle Championships, as he placed fourth. Peterson trains and competes for PINnacle Wrestling School in Shoreview, Minn., and is ranked No. 22 in the USA Wrestling Future Olympian rankings.
Smith will enter his senior year at Rock Bridge High School with a 126-25 career record. The son of Missouri head wrestling coach Brian Smith, Quinn is a two-time Missouri placewinner, taking fourth as a junior and fifth as a freshman.
Staack, a three-time Iowa state qualifier, owns a 106-44 career record entering his senior year at Waverly-Shell Rock High School. He is a Iowa Junior Freestyle state champion and a USAW Junior Folkstyle All-American. Coming off of a fifth-place finish at state as a junior, Staack is also a two-time USAW Cadet Folkstyle All-American, along with earning All-American honors in freestyle. The two-year team captain also earned All-American honors in the Junior Freestyle Duals.
The five student-athletes signed by Bono and assistants Israel Silva and Andrew Sorenson will join last year’s No. 6 recruiting class in the 2014-15 season.
