NDSU Faces No. 17 Northern Iowa, Northern Illinois Saturday

The North Dakota State wrestling team will travel to DeKalb, Ill., this weekend for the Northern Duals triangular with the No. 17-ranked University of Northern Iowa and host Northern Illinois University. The Bison are scheduled to wrestle Northern Iowa at noon on Saturday, Nov. 23, followed by Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. at the Northern Illinois Convocation Center.

Monk-Moore Rematch: Saturday should feature a rematch between No. 5 Steven Monk and No. 15 Cooper Moore of Northern Iowa. Moore won a 6-4 decision over Monk in the 165-pound finals of the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open hosted by Concordia Moorhead on Nov. 16.

Zillmer Ranked: NDSU sophomore Hayden Zillmer moved into the national rankings for the first time in his career this season, coming in at No. 19 by Amateur Wrestling News and No. 20 by Intermat at 174 pounds this week.

On The Brink: The first full episode of “Steven Monk: On the Brink” is scheduled to be released on the NDSU Athletics YouTube Channel next week. NDSU All-Access is producing a season-long documentary on the No. 5-ranked senior’s season.

Last Dual with Northern Iowa: The No. 25-ranked North Dakota State wrestling team found itself down 14-4 through five matches against No. 20 Northern Iowa on Feb. 3, 2013, but NDSU gave the Bison Sports Arena crowd plenty of reason to stick around. The Bison rallied to within 18-15 going into the heavyweight bout, but a 4-1 decision by Northern Iowa’s Blayne Beale over Evan Knutson was enough to give the Panthers a 21-15 dual victory.

Northern Iowa won six of the 10 matches and tallied three major decisions. Trent Sprenkle (125), Steven Monk (165) and Kallen Kleinschmidt (197) all won major decisions for the Bison.

Series with Northern Iowa: Northern Iowa leads the all-time series with North Dakota State, 19-2-1. The Panthers have won the last 13 meetings, and the last Bison dual victory over UNI occurred in the 1976-77 season.

About Northern Illinois: NIU is 2-2 this season after splitting four duals at the EMU Duals on Nov. 16. The Huskies lost to Michigan 22-9 and Oregon State 27-9, before defeating Clarion 21-15 and Findlay 41-9.

Series with Northern Illinois: The Bison are 1-2 all-time against the Huskies, with all three duals coming between 2006 and 2009. NIU won the last meeting, 23-16, on Dec. 13, 2009.
