SAINT CLOUD, Minn. – Justin Reinsma and Andrew Rodas’ fourth place finish highlighted Southwest Minnesota State’s performance at the Holiday Inn/Husky Open hosted by St. Cloud State on Saturday. Reinsma went 2-2 at 133 pounds, while Rodas went 1-2 at 184 pounds after receiving an opening round bye. Micah Larson also placed for the Mustangs as the senior 197-pounder placed sixth.
Anotonio Meikel went 1-2 at 125 pounds with a pin of Ben Kollaja at 1:30, but then took consecutive losses in his next two bouts – 14-0 major decision to Mike Fuenffinger (Augsburg) and by fall at 4:23 to Jarred Oftedahl (SCSU).
Justin Reinsma picked up his 92nd and 93rd career wins as the senior defeated Cody Paulsen (SCSU) and Andrew Foutch (SCSU) by decision to advance to the semifinal round, but he fell 6-5 to Joseph Her (Wisconsin Parkside) in the semis. In the third place match, Reinsma took a 10-4 loss to Label Lewis (Rochester CC) and finished the day with a 2-2 record and a fourth place finish.
Caleb Smothers went 1-2 at 141 pounds with his lone win coming over Dario Gamino (Waldorf) in the consolation first round.
In the 184 pound division, Andrew Rodas received an opening round bye and followed it up with a 15-2 major decision over Kyle Spengler (St. John’s) to advance to the semis. Rodas took two straight losses and finished the day with a 1-2 record and a fourth place finish.
Micah Larson took sixth at 197 pounds to round out SMSU’s place-winners in the tournament. Larson claimed a 14-2 major decision in the opening round but dropped a 10-4 decision in the quarterfinal round to send him to the consolation round. There, Larson won two consecutive to reach the fifth place match but fell 10-6 to Uthman Rabiu (SCSU). Larson finished the day 3-2.
