Minnesota Wins Border Battle, 28-6

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 2 University of Minnesota Golden Gopher wrestling team was able to cruise past border rival Wisconsin in front of 4,217 fans at the Sports Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. The 28-6 victory allowed the Gophers to improve to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in Big Ten competition.

Minnesota GophersThe Gophers started the dual with two consecutive losses as Jordan Kingsley (10-7) and No. 10 David Thorn (14-3) fell to their Badger opponents.

No. 5 Chris Dardanes and No. 2 Nick Dardanes were able to start the winning streak for the Gophers as they would go on to win eight consecutive bouts and eventually win the dual. N. Dardanes’ major decision over Rylan Lubeck gave the Golden Gophers their first lead of the dual, 7-6.

Brandon Kingsley was able to improve to 14-5 on the season with his second big win at 157 of the weekend. He was able to defeat Timothy Ruschell by decision, 6-2.

Danny Zilverberg came away with a major decision over Frank Cousins Jr. of Wisconsin, 10-2 at 165 lbs and Kevin Steinhaus won by major decision over Dylan Iczkowski. No. 5 Logan Storley entered the Gophers line up after sitting out on Friday evening and walked away with a 9-5 decision over Wisconsin’s Scott Liegel.

No. 1 Scott Schiller extended his undefeated season with a win over Timothy McCall of Wisconsin. His overall record is now 20-0 and he remains the only Golden Gopher with an undefeated record this season.

No. 1 Tony Nelson bounced back after a sudden victory loss on Friday evening to win by decision over Badger heavyweight Connor Medbery.

The Golden Gophers will continue Big Ten competition as they travel to Michigan and Michigan State next weekend for two conference duals as they look to continue their undfeated season.
