Newberry 30, MSU-Mankato 6

Mankato Minn. – The Minnesota State wrestling team lost its first home dual of the season to #4 Newberry College 30-6 Thursday evening at Taylor Center in front of a crow of 425 people.

MSU drops to 2-1 overall but stays unbeaten in NSIC action with a 2-0 record, while Newberry improves to 8-0.

MSU-Mankato MavericksThe Mavericks had two weight class wins on the night. Adam Cooling (Fr. 157 lbs.), Sawyer Hoffman (So. 165 lbs.), and Scott VanDeLoo (So. 184 lbs.) all lost their respective weight classes by two points or less.

Darick Vancura (Fr. 174 lbs.) got the Mavericks into the win column with a 3-2 decision win over Joseph Pittman. Vancura recorded a takedown while Pittman gathered two escapes. Vancura had over a minute of riding time to secure the victory.

Brendan Eichmann (Sr. 197 lbs.) finished off his opponent, Braden Carter, with a 9-7 decision. Eichmann was down 5-2 in the third period before Carter gave up three points, two for stalling and one for unnecessary roughness. With 25 seconds left, Eichmann preformed a reversal for two points and a take down for another two points. Carter got an escape and a point for riding time.

MSU will take part in the NWCA Nationals Duals Jan 11th and 12th in Des Moines, Iowa. Its first opponent will be Newberry.
