Five Viking wrestlers earn Divsion II All-Academic honors

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Augustana had five wrestlers named to the 2013-14 Division II All-Academic Wrestling teams in a release on Friday morning. Jayd Docken earned first team honors while Deven Donais, Bradyn Neises, Jeff Nielsen, and Parker Swanson all collected honorable mention accolades.

In order to be eligible for Division II All-Academic Wrestling honors, wrestlers must maintain at least a 3-0 grade point average while being in his second year at the institution. The wrestler also must be a starter or key reserve who had two letters of recommendation submitted for their nomination.

Augustana VikingsDocken, who is currently wrestling at the NCAA Division II Championships, recorded a 3.12 grade point average as a Sports Management major. Docken tallied a 17-3 record and a third-place finish at the NCAA Super Region III Championships to earn a bid to the national meet. The Winner, S.D. native was selected by the Division II coaches to be a member of the first team.

Donais, a redshirt freshman from Big Lake, Minn., collected honorable mention accolades after finishing the season with an 8-12 record and a 3.02 GPA while studying biology.

Neises experienced a great season as he was just one win away from earning a spot at the NCAA Championships. The junior from Howard, S.D. finished the season with an 11-9 record while maintaining a 3.05 GPA as a sports management major to be named to the division-wide honorable mention list.

Nielsen finished the with a 7-12 record, wrestling at 174 and 197 pounds and was named to the honorable mention list. The Zimmerman, Minn. native sport a 3.15 GPA as a foreign language education major.

Swanson wrestled up at 174 pounds in the NCAA Super Region III Championships and defeated the reigning national runner-up to highlight the junior’s season. The Canton, S.D. native finished the season with a 14-10 record and a 3.24 GPA as an exercise science major.
