BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Augustana placed four wrestlers on the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference list released by the league on Thursday afternoon. TJ North and Sean Derry each earned first-team honors while Brady Neises and Jayd Docken collected second-team accolades.
First team honors were given to the highest-finishing wrestler at the NCAA Super Region 3 Championships for each weight class. The next-highest finishing wrestlers at the regional received second-team honors for their weight class. Any wrestler that earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships will be named to the second team.
At 125 pounds, North wrestled to the NCAA Super Region 3 title and a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championships this past weekend. The Elk Point, S.D. native finished the season with a 33-4 record, including a 22-1 mark against Division II opponents.
North’s 24-match winning streak was snapped in a 7-4 decision loss to Findlay’s Ben Sergent in the 125-pound NCAA title bout. North receives All-NSIC honors for the first time in his career after an 8-0 record against NSIC opponents.
The lone senior for the Vikings, Derry collects All-NSIC honors for the second time and earns a spot on the first team for the first time in his career. At 184 pounds, Derry posted an 8-0 record in NSIC competition and a 28-3 record on the season. The Omaha, Neb. native finished sixth at the NCAA Super Region 3 Championships, falling in the second tiebreaker of the fifth-place bout that would have earned him a spot in the NCAA Championship field.
Neises used a big upset at the NCAA Super Region 3 Championships to place sixth and earn a spot on the All-NSIC second team, the first of the 157 pounder’s career. Hailing from Howard, S.D., Neises defeated fourth-ranked Chase White of Nebraska-Kearney to earn a spot in the regional semifinals at the end of day one. The redshirt junior couldn’t recapture the magic on day two and lost in the sixth-place bout, but still finished as the second-highest wrestler from the NSIC to take home second team all-conference honors.
Docken repeats as an All-NSIC performer at 197 pounds, grabbing second-team honors for the second consecutive year. The Winner, S.D. native posted a 17-5 record on the season while losing just one bout in conference competition for a 7-1 mark. Docken reached the semifinals of the regional before losing to NSIC wrestler of the year, Upper Iowa’s Carl Broghammer.
Docken bounced back to take third at the NCAA Super Region 3 Championships. The redshirt junior lost both of his NCAA Championship matches, missing his chance to repeat as an All-American.
Broghammer collects NSIC wrestler of the year honors with a runner-up finish at the regional and a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Austin Goergen of St. Cloud State takes home NSIC freshman of the year and Southwest Minnesota State’s Jesse Nelson was named NSIC coach of the year.
