Monk, Julson Remain Alive at NCAA Wrestling Championships After Day One

OKLAHOMA CITY – North Dakota State Bison wrestler Steven Monk picked up his second victory of the day in the NCAA Wrestling Championships second round Thursday evening at Chesapeake Energy Arena, advancing him to the quarterfinals Friday morning, March 21, and inching him within one win of attaining All-America honors.

NDSU BisonMonk (33-1), the No. 4 seed at 165 pounds, pinned 13th seeded Daniel Yates (19-8) of Michigan at 3:38 in his second round match, earning him a quarterfinal showdown against Bloomsburg’s Josh Veltre (24-5). The winner of the match will be guaranteed a top-eight finish and All-American honors. The senior from Wausau, Wis., has now won 28 consecutive matches since Nov., 2013, and has a team-high 12 pins on the season.

Kurtis Julson (22-12) also picked up a victory in the evening session, taking an 8-4 decision over Oklahoma State’s Nolan Boyd (29-13) in the 184-pound wrestleback first round to remain alive in the championships. The junior from Inver Grove Heights, Minn., will meet No. 8 seed Tim Dudley (26-7) of Nebraska in the wrestleback second round Friday morning.

Evan Knutson (17-12) was pinned in the first period of his pigtail wrestleback match at 285 pounds against Nick Tavanello of Ohio State, eliminating him from the NCAA Championships, while Hayden Zillmer (27-8) saw his first championships come to an end as well after dropping a 9-2 decision to Cal State-Bakersfield’s Bryce Hammond in the 174 pound wrestleback first round.
