COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University juniors Joe Hessing (Loretto, Minn./Delano) and Ryan Michaelis (Monticello, Minn.) were named 2013-14 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans at the NCAA Division III Championships March 14-15.
The honor is the second for Michaelis, who made his second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division III Championships March 14. He lost his first bout at 197 pounds to sixth-ranked Paul Glover of Brockport State (N.Y.), 6-3, and left the tournament with a 10-2 loss to Heidelberg’s (Ohio) Jason Russell. An accounting major with a 3.65 GPA, Michaelis ended the season with a 16-12 record. He is a two-time Academic All-MIAC (minimum 3.50 GPA) honoree in football and was named to the Capital One Academic All-District team last fall.
Hessing collected three bonus-point wins to finish fifth at 149 pounds at the NCAA West Regional March 1 and end his season with a 20-12 record, including a team-leading 13 pins. He barely missed a trip to the third-place match with a 15-13 overtime loss in the consolation semifinal. A senior academically with a 3.33 GPA in management, Hessing has the option to return in 2014-15 after missing all of the 2012-13 season due to injury.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must carry a GPA of at least 3.20 (cumulative or last academic year) and meet one of the three criteria: qualify for the NCAA Championships, place in the top six at the NCAA regional, or win more than 66 percent of his matches and wrestle in 50 percent of scheduled dates.
SJU has now totaled 12 Scholar All-Americans over the last six seasons.
The Johnnies finished third at the NCAA West Regional and tied for 59th at nationals in 2013-14. SJU has qualified two or more wrestlers to the national tournament in 24 of the last 26 seasons.
