MANKATO, Minn. — Wrestling coach Jim Makovsky has announced the 2013-14 Minnesota State individual awards.
A total of four Mavericks received six awards for their efforts this past season.
Freshman Darick Vancura (Lakefield, Minn.) received two awards, including the team’s Most Valuable Wrestler and Top Newcomer Awards. Vancura finished the season with a record of 27-12, including 14 pinfalls and one tech fall.
Sophomore Alphonso Vruno (Sandwich, Ill.) earned two awards as well including the Purple Heart Award and the Hustle Award. The Purple Heart Award is given to the person who demonstrates the most courage, mental and physical toughness. On the season, Vruno finished with a 20-13 record and now boasts a career record of 57-21.
Freshman Trevor Schultz (Welcome, Minn.) boasted the Most Improved Award. He finished his season with 11 victories, including a victory over a returning NCAA Division II qualifier at the end of the season.
Freshman Adam Cooling (Madelia, Minn.) took home the Coaches Award. The Coaches Award is voted on by the coaching staff and is awarded to the team member who best represents the wrestling program both on the mat and in the classroom. Cooling finished his season with a 24-8 record and boasted a 4.0 GPA through the fall semester.
