Mavericks Add Seven Student-Athletes

MANKATO, Minn. — Head wrestling coach Jim Makovsky has announced that seven student-athletes have signed NCAA Letters of Intent to attend Minnesota State University.

All signings and transfers are contingent upon admission to MSU and compliance with NCAA rules, including certification by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

MSU-Mankato Mavericks“I am excited about this group coming in,” Makovsky said. “We have a few experienced guys coming in and we really added some depth to our team. We’ll have multiple options next season with several guys coming in with good credentials.”

Da’Wayne Robertson (Ellsworth CC), Malcolm Allen (Iowa Central CC), Dylan Herman (USC High School), Colten Carlson (USC High School), Corey Abernathy (Waverly/Shell Rock HS), Briar Adams (Lawton MacArthur HS), and Tyler Funk (Foley HS) will join the Mavericks beginning this fall.

A native of Mesa, Ariz., Robertson (125 lbs.) joins the Maverick wrestling squad after two seasons at Ellsworth Community College. A national qualifier in 2013, Robertson won the NJCAA regional championship as a freshman and followed up with a third-place finish in the NJCAA National Tournament this past season. In high school, Robertson finished third in the state tournament in 2011 and second 2012, to go along with an eighth-place finish at senior nationals.

A native of New Rockelle, N.Y., Allen (285 lbs.) won the state championship in 2011. In 2014, Allen won a regional championship, en route to a second place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament.

Herman (Wells, Minn.) is a five-time state qualifier dating back to 2010. Boasting a career record of 188-41, including 114 falls, Herman (149 lbs.) earned a pair of third-place finishes at the state tournament in 2012 and 2013, to go along with a fourth-place finish in 2014.

A native of Wells, Minn., Carlson (174/184 lbs.) is a three-time state qualifier dating back to 2012. He earned a fourth-place finish in 2013 and a second-place finish in 2014. He finished third at the NHSCA Freshman Nationals in 2011 and followed with a fourth-place finish at the NHSCA Junior Nationals in 2013. Carlson is also a competitive bull wrestlier, having won the state championship in 2010, en route to a fifth-place finish in the nation.

Abernathy (Waverly, Iowa) is a two-time state qualifier. He won a pair of NEIC conference championships, to go along with two district championships. Abernathy (174/184 lbs.), finished eighth at the state tournament in 2013 and followed up with a state championship in 2014.

A native of Duncan, Okla., Adams (125 lbs.) is a three-time state qualifier, where he earned two third-place finishes in 2012 and 2014, and one second-place finish in 2013. He earned two regional championships, as his team earned three state runner-up finishes.

A three-time state qualifier out of Foley, Minn., Funk (133 lbs.) placed three times in the state tournament. In 2012, he finished sixth and followed up with a second a fourth-place finish during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, respectively.
