St. Cloud State Adds New Recruit from Illinois

St. Cloud, Minn. – St. Cloud State head wrestling coach Steve Costanzo has announced the addition of Michael Hobbs-Perrone (Westmont, IL/Downers Grove South High School) for 2014-15. Hobbs-Perrone will join additional student-wrestlers who have made commitments to the Huskies: Aaron Bates (Green Isla, MN), Austin Rake (Valdez, AK), Brett Velasquez (Bennington, NE), Bryce Kirchner (St. Joseph, MN), Cody Linssen (Cottage Grove, MN), Curt Zachmeier (Mandan, ND), Garrett Miller (Kellogg, MN), Larry Bomstad (Lake Lillion, MN), Monty Holm (Preston, MN), Nick Osowski (Oshkosh, WI), Noah Cuzzetto (Lake Stevens, WA), Ryan Stottler (Glenwood, MN), Tim Prescott (McPherson, KS), Travis Swanson (Cambridge, MN), Vince Dietz (Homer Glen, IL), V.J. Giulio (American Falls, ID) and Wesley Schultz (Sun Prairie, WI).

SCSU Huskies“Michael is a great addition to our recruiting class and program,” said Costanzo. “He has all of the key attributes to be successful as a college wrestler. Hobbs-Perrone is physical, strong and fast for a big man. He will add a lot depth and strength to our upper weights.”

A Downers Grove South High School graduate and Westmont, IL resident, Hobbs-Perrone, will join the Huskies after finishing fifth at the 2014 3A IHSA State Championships and going 38-6 on the season. He is a two-time double All-American at the prestigious Junior National Championships. In 2013, he finished seventh in Greco Roman and eighth in Freestyle. This summer, Hobbs-Perrone finished fifth in Greco Roman and sixth in Freestyle respectfully at the Junior National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. He is the son of Tisa Grant.

The Huskies finished their 2013-14 season with a 19-1 overall record and won their third consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships with a perfect 8-0 record. The Huskies placed sixth as a team at the 2014 NCAA Division II championships and gained a third place finish at the 2014 NCAA Division II Super 3 Regional.

SCSU also charted a third place finish at the 2014 NWCA Division II National Duals tournament. The Huskies were consistently ranked among the nation’s top 10 teams throughout the 2013-14 campaign and they finished the season ranked sixth in the final DII national polls.

The Huskies will resume 2014-15 competition at their annual Black/Red Classic, which will be held on Thursday, November 6 in Halenbeck Hall at 7 p.m.
