SCSU preps for season with retreat at Camp Courage

St. Cloud, Minn. – The #5 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team spent the weekend of Oct. 24-26 participating in team retreat at “Camp Courage.” In addition to preparing for the upcoming 2014-15 season at the retreat, the Huskies also helped lend a hand with fall chores around camp. Camp Courage is a non-profit camp for children and adults with disablities located near Maple Lake, Minn.

SCSU Huskies“We would like to thank True Friends for their hospitality in allowing SCSU wrestling to do its annual team retreat on their property,” said SCSU head coach Steve Costanzo. “Our guys really look forward to this weekend during the year. The retreat gives our team a chance to get away from the day-to-day grind of academics and training and get to know one another. It is perhaps one of the most important early season events that we engage in as a team.”

The Huskies enjoyed an annual chili feed dinner and took part in friendly games of activities throughout the evening. In keeping up with tradition, Huskies wrestlers and coaches gathered around the evening campfire to discuss team goals, expectations and of course a good old joke. The Huskies also helped the camp prepare for the upcoming winter season by splitting firewood and painting picnic tables during the weekend.

“I felt like this was a great event for our guys,” said assistant coach Brady Wilson. “Team building is so important among athletic teams. We really needed this time together to get to know one another and understand what each of us expects from this season.”

The Huskies open up their 2014-15 campaign on Thursday, November 6, as they host their Annual Black/Red Classic in Halenbeck Hall. SCSU earned a number five national ranking in the 2014-15 Division II preseason poll. Last year, the Huskies claimed their third consecutive NSIC championships with an 8-0 record and also scored a 19-1 overall record while finishing the season in sixth place at the 2014 NCAA Division II championships.
