Augustana signs two for 2015-16

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana College head wrestling Coach Jason Reitmeier announced the signing of two athletes on Wednesday to join the Vikings for the 2015-16 campaign. Gable Verschoor of Kingsley, Iowa and Duncan Stoebner of Tyndall, S.D. have both signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at Augustana.

Augustana VikingsVerschoor brings a strong high school career to Augustana where he was a three-year starter and letterwinner at Woodbury Central High School. Verschoor has compiled a career record of 138-28 his junior and sophomore seasons, and a seventh-place finish at state his junior season. As a freshman, Verschoor finished fourth at 106-pounds followed by placing fifth at state.

“We are excited to have Gable join the Augustana wrestling family. He comes from a family tradition of wrestlers.” Reitmeier said. “Gable brings a true passion for the sport with him and love of competition. Gable has always been a talented lightweight, and now that he is growing into his body, it will benefit him in the higher weights. He also is an excellent student with high goals beyond the mat.”

Stoebner is a three year starter and letterwinner at Bon Homme High School. Stoebner combined for an overall career record of 82-1 in his sophomore and junior seasons. He was a state champion his junior campaign in the 113-pound weight class, leading his team to a fifth-place finish at State. As a sophomore, Stoebner won state in 106-pounds pushing his team to a sixth-place finish at state.

“Duncan is exactly what we look for in a student athlete. He is extremely smart and one of the hardest working kids out there.” Reitmeier said. “He has reached the highest level as a high school wrestler winning state titles, and now has goals to reach the highest level in college wrestling. Duncan is also an exceptional student, we are excited to welcome Duncan to the program.”

The Vikings’ continue competition this weekend traveling to Kearney, Neb. to wrestle in the Holiday Inn Open hosted by the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
