Dragons Have Solid Showing at Finn Grinaker Open

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Third-place finishes from sophomores Blake Bosch and Nader Abdullatif led the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team at the Finn Grinaker Cobber Open hosted by Concordia College on Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.

No team scores were kept at the event.

MSUM also got fourth-place finishes from sophomore Isaac Novacek at 149 pounds and senior Philippe Walker at 141.

MSU-Moorhead Dragons“Overall we wrestled pretty well,” MSUM head coach Kris Nelson said. “We have things to work on. We need to work on not giving up points at the end of the periods.”

Bosch won his first match at 133 pounds by disqualification and then pinned Jason Huger of Minot State in 2:37. Bosch lost in the semifinals to St. Cloud State’s Jarred Oftedahl by fall in 5:46. The Wishek, N.D., native came back with a pair of strong wins to take third. Bosch beat Tanner Johnshoy of St. Cloud State, 7-0 and added a 7-0 win over North Dakota State’s Hunter Weber in the third-place match.

“Blake had a good win in the third place match,” Nelson said. “Blake wrestled well.”

Sophomore Nader Abdullatif continued his strong start to the season at 285 pounds. He opened with a bye and then pinned Jonah Westbury of Mary in 3:42. Abdullatif then fell to Justice Davis of Concordia, 3-1, but also worked his way through the consolation bracket to get third. He topped Luke Belich of St. Cloud State, 6-2 and then rolled to a 9-3 win over Minot State’s Mitchell Eull in the third-place match.

Sophomore Isaac Novacek had a good day as well, placing fourth at 149. He rolled to a 20-3 technical fall win over NDSU’s Nate Ryker before losing a tough 5-4 decision to Taner Trembley of St. Cloud. Novacek came back win a pin of Minot’s Zachary Cummings in 1:33 before falling by injury default in the third-place match.

Senior Philippe Walker was fourth at 141 pounds. He beat Anthony Kifer of Jamestown, 6-4 and topped Alec Lindsey of Mary by injury default. Walker lost to Thomas Thorn of Minnesota, 5-0 and Josh Shupe of Minnesota, 6-3 to finish the day 2-2.

Shawn Porter pinned Matthew Hernandez of Jamestown in 5:31 in his opening match at 184. He lost a tough match to William Balow of Minnesota, 4-2 and was eliminated by Collin Sohn of NDSU by fall in 3:56.

MSUM hosts the Dragon Open on Dec. 7 at 9 a.m. at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
