NDSU Set to Host 44th Annual Bison Open in the Fargodome on Saturday

The 23rd-ranked (USA Today/NWCA Top 25) North Dakota State wrestling team is set to host the 44th annual Bison Open (#BisonOpen44) starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, in the Fargodome … Teams scheduled to compete at the all-day event include 2nd-ranked University of Minnesota, South Dakota State, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Concordia College, Jamestown College, the University of Mary, Minot State University, Northern State University, Southwest Minnesota State University, Northland Community & Technical College and Ridgewater College.

Fargodome No Stranger to Wrestling
The Fargodome will serve as the host site for the 44th Bison Open while construction takes place across the parking lot on the new Sanford Health Athletic Complex … However, this splendid venue is no stranger to the sport and has been the host facility for the USA Wrestling Junior and Cadet Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Championships for the past 22 years … The Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse will be the home site for the regular season dual matches and the NCAA West Regional/Western Wrestling Conference Championships.

Streak Stays Alive
With a pair of champions, All-American Steven Monk (165) and sophomore Josh Rodriguez (125), 2013 marked the eighth straight season that at least one North Dakota State University wrestler came away with a Bison Open title and the second year in a row with multiple championships … Returning Bison Open champions for NDSU include Rodriguez at both 125 and 133 (2012), and senior Kurtis Julson at 174 pounds (2011) … North Dakota State head coach Roger Kish (4), assistant coach Manny Rivera (3), and video coordinator Steven Monk (2) combined for nine Bison Open titles during their collegiate careers.

Three Bison Claim Daktronics Open Individual Titles, One Runner-up Finish
North Dakota State University wrestlers Mitch Bengtson (141), Kurtis Julson (174) and Evan Knutson (285) each won individual titles, while Hayden Zillmer (184) was runner-up at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Nov. 2. Eight other Bison also placed in the top six at the tournament. Kyle Gliva, Justin Scherkenbach and Hunter Weber placed fourth, fifth and sixth in the 133-pound division, while Clay Ream and Tanner Carlisle placed fourth and sixth, respectively, at 149 pounds … Clay Cathey (141), Steven Keogh (157) and Matt Gray (165) each finished fifth in their respective weight classes.
