NDSU’s Nick O’Brien Wins Finn Grinaker Cobber Open Maroon 133 Title; Freimund & Umlauf Both Runner-up

MOORHEAD, Minn.–North Dakota State University’s Nick O’Brien, wrestling unattached, took first place in the Finn Grinaker Open Maroon 133-pound division, while unattached Adam Freimund was runner-up in the Maroon 285 division and Joe Umlauf was second in the Gold 149 division in the annual event on Saturday, Nov. 22, hosted by Concordia College. Nine Bison wrestlers placed among the top six.

O’Brien, a freshman from Plymouth, Minn. (Wayzata H.S.), went 4-0 during the tournament improved to 6-2 overall. He recorded back-to-back pins over Minot State’s Chris Warf (4:57) and St. Cloud State’s Joe Mosley (0:50) and posted a 16-1 tech fall over Jamestown’s Joseph Zapeda. O’Brien had a 12-4 major decision over Concordia’s Dawit Gebreab in the title match.

NDSU BisonFreimund, a freshman from Harvard, Ill. (Harvard H.S.), won two of three matches and is 3-5 on the season. He won 8-0 with a major decision over Northland’s Brendan Edner and edged St. Cloud State’s Bryce Kirchner 2-1 to advance. Freimund lost 5-0 to St. Cloud State’s Mike Hobbs in the championship match.

Umlauf, a redshirt freshman from Wausau, Wis. (Marshall H.S.) went 2-1 during the day and improved to 6-5. He advanced with a 7-3 win over Jake Kostik of Concordia and 9-4 overtime win over teammate Mitchell Friedman. Umlauf lost 8-2 to St. Cloud State’s Taner Trembley in the finals. Friedman, a redshirt freshman from Oconto Falls, Wis. (Oconto Falls H.S.), won three of four matches to placed third and to improve to 5-5 overall.

NDSU freshman Charley Popp (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge H.S.) finished third in the Maroon 165-pound division. He won three of four matches on a pair of major decisions and a tech fall.

North Dakota State 133-pound sophomore Hunter Weber and 157-pound redshirt freshman Alex Blaney each finished fourth in their respective Gold weight classes, while freshmen Tyler McNutt (174) and Collin Sohn (184) both placed sixth in the Gold division.
