Jacks battle, but fall to #7 Oklahoma State, 25-9

MIAMI, Okla. – South Dakota State (0-1, 0-0) dropped its opening dual of the year to #7 Oklahoma State, 25-9. Three Jackrabbits picked up wins on the day at the neutral site of Miami, Oklahoma, home of Northeast Oklahoma A&M College.

“We are extremely excited to see how far we can take this group,” head coach Chris Bono said. “We battled with some of the top guys in the country and were right there in a couple different matches. I can’t wait to get back to work.”

SDSU JackrabbitsBrance Simms, #18 Cody Pack and Nate Rotert all picked up wins on the day.

Following a major at 125, Simms defeated Brian Crutchmer, 6-1. After a scoreless first period, Simms used a pair of takedowns in the second to solidify the victory.

After dropping hard-fought bouts at 141 and 149 by Luke Zilverberg and Colin Holler, respectively, #18 Pack controlled the match and won handily over Anthony Collica, 8-2. Zilverberg dropped an 8-5 decision to Davie Dolan, while Holler lost in a thriller, 6-5 to #3 Josh Kindig.

In his Jackrabbit debut, freshman David Kocer dropped a 7-6 decision at 174 to Jordan Rogers.

In his first match dawning the Jackrabbit singlet, Rotert beat #15 Austin Schafer, 8-6. Rotert and Schafer exchanged blows, but Rotert prevailed to pick up his second win against a ranked opponent in as many matches.

In the heavyweight finale, J.J. Everard battled hard, but dropped an 8-4 decision to #5 Austin Mardsen.

In all, five Jackrabbits made their debuts in the Jackrabbit singlet as Zilverberg, Holler, Kyle Leet, Kocer and Rotert all wrestled attached for the first time.

SDSU will head to Philadelphia next weekend to wrestle Drexel on Saturday and at the Keystone Classic, hosted by Penn, on Sunday.
