Mavericks’ Robertson Wins, Allen and VanDeLoo place at UNI Open

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Minnesota State University’s Da’Wayne Robertson (Jr., 125 lbs. 3-0) won his weight class at the UNI Open Saturday. Malcolm Allen (Jr., 285 lbs. 3-1) finished second, while Scott VanDeLoo (Jr., 184 lbs. 3-2) took home a fourth place finish.

Robertson got his day started with a fall over Angelo San Juan (Luther College) at the 3:00 minute mark after receiving a bye in the first round. In the semifinals, the Mesa, Ariz., native won by a decision win over Nate Smith (Iowa, Central CC), 6-2. Robertson secured the title with a 10-5 decision win over Mitch Rogaliner (Michigan State). This is Robertson’s second 1st place finish in an open tournament this season, his first being at the Auggie-Adidas Open on Nov. 22.

MSU-Mankato MavericksIt only took Allen 45 seconds to win his first match of the day as he recorded a fall over Richard Gonzalez (Iowa Central CC). His next two wins were by medical forfeit over Luke Jones (Michigan State) and Quean Smith (Iowa State). In the 1st place match, Allen lost to Devin Mellon (Missouri) in a sudden victory 1 by a score of 3-1 with six seconds left.

VanDeLoo started his day with a loss to Adam Drain (Northern Iowa) by a score of 5-1. After two wins in the consolation bracket, VanDeLoo met up with Drain again. This time around, VanDeLoo won by a 3-1 decision win over Drain. VanDeLoo placed fourth on the day with a loss to Jayden DeVilbiss (Luther College), who is rated fourth in DIII.

The Mavericks last open contest of the season will be at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev. on Sunday Dec. 21.
