Jacks Beats SIUE; Falls to #5 Mizzou and Kent State

COLUMBIA, Mo. – South Dakota State (3-5 overall, 0-0 WWC) went 1-2 at Friday’s tri-dual, hosted by Missouri. SDSU beat SIU-Edwardsville, 29-9, but fell to #5 Mizzou 31-6 and Kent State 31-6.

“We had a big opportunity to get some quality wins today and just didn’t come through,” head coach Chris Bono said. “We started out with a big win over SIUE, but didn’t really carry momentum throughout the rest of the day.”

SDSU JackrabbitsIn the first dual of the day, SDSU won seven matches and picked up two falls en route to a 29-9 win over SIUE.

Sophomore Isaac Andrade (125) opened the day with a fall over SIUE’s Cameron Kelly at 1:14. Andrade led 5-2 and had three backs points coming before time of the fall.

Following a pin at 133, Kocer (141) regained Jackrabbit momentum, fighting his way to a 5-3 win. Kocer gave up an early takedown, but worked his way to a reversal for a 2-2 tie after the first period. Kocer escaped and got an additional takedown for the 5-2 win.

Redshirt freshman Colin Holler (149) came out aggressive and got the Jacks’ second fall of the day early in the second period. Holler’s pin of Karsten Van Velsor was his second of the season.

#13 Cody Pack (157) and Ben Schwery (165) extended SDSU’s lead with back-to-back major decisions. Pack defeated Erik Travers, while Schwery downed Clayton Bass, 16-3 and 14-1, respectively.

Against #5 Missouri (10-0, 3-0 MAC), SDSU was held winless, but was awarded six points for a forfeit at heavyweight.

At 141, Alex Kocer led #8 Lavon Mayes 5-3 heading into the third, but Mayes recorded three takedowns in the final period for the 9-8 decision.

In a battle of ranked wrestlers at 157, #11 Joey Lavallee prevailed over #13 Cody Pack in the second tie breaker, 4-2. Following a Lavallee takedown to take the lead, Pack’s attempt at a reversal was negated following a video review.

Andrade opened the final dual against Kent State with a 10-3 win over Drew Dickson, but SDSU didn’t find the win column again until the 197-lb bout.

In the 197-lb showdown, redshirt freshman Nate Rotert beat Cole Baxter, 3-2. Rotert trailed 2-1 midway through the second when he scored a reversal. That ended the scoring for the Jacks on the day.

“Our guys will take a few days for the holidays before we return to action with another big opportunity at Midlands,” Bono added.
