Johnnie Wrestling Hosts Ridgewater Wednesday

The Saint John’s wrestling team hosts Ridgewater for a 7 p.m. dual on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Sexton Arena.

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s (4-16 dual record) wrestled five duals in three days last weekend (Jan. 23-25). The Johnnies took advantage of five forfeits and three bonus-point wins in the 45-9 win over St. Olaf Friday night in Collegeville. A depleted SJU second team forfeited three weights and went 0-3 at the Lakeland Duals on Saturday. Each team won two bouts, but both were bonus-point wins for the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) in a 28-24 loss. The host Muskies and SJU double-forfeited three weights in the close 14-12 win for Lakeland before Wisconsin-Platteville took full advantage of the three forfeits in the 35-11 defeat to end the day.

3-0: Freshman Jackson Graham (Apple Valley, Minn.) and sophomore Robert Tait (Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) both went 3-0 at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Graham tallied two bonus-point wins (10-1 major decision and a 17-0 technical fall) to improve to 3-1 on the year, while Tait recorded two major decisions to move to 4-6. Sophomore Adam Sutlief (Browerville, Minn.), a transfer from Ridgewater, and freshman Tevin Zavadil (Clearwater, Minn./Monticello) each went 2-1 on the day.

Saint John's JohnniesBONUS-POINT WINS SINK SJU: SJU surrendered six bonus-point decisions in a 34-12 loss at sixth-ranked Augsburg on Jan. 25 in Minneapolis. Junior Ben Henle(Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) put SJU on the board with a 5-3 win at 141 pounds to move to 22-5 on the season. He has now won 16 of his last 17 matches and is ranked as high as seventh nationally by D3wrestle.com.

Three straight wins for the Auggies gave them a 24-3 lead before freshman Nick Hoff (Rushford, Minn./Rushford-Peterson) tallied the upset of the day. Hoff gave up a takedown to Augsburg’s Eric Hensel (14-6 record) 23 seconds into the match and found himself on his back with the referee making the count for back points. That is, until Hoff rolled into a headlock of Hensel and pinned him in 1:49 to improve to 7-5 on the year.

Senior Ryan Michaelis (Monticello, Minn.) won the showdown of ranked wrestlers at 197 pounds, 7-2. Ranked seventh nationally by D3wrestle.com, Michaelis tallied three takedowns of the Auggies’ Matt Hechsel, who is ranked as high as seventh by the NWCA, to earn the win and deny Hechsel (19-7) his 20th victory of the season. Michaelis is now 9-1 on the year with five pins.

Sophomore Colin Fisher (Eagan, Minn.) trailed Augsburg’s Donny Longendyke, a transfer from Division I Nebraska who is ranked seventh nationally, 4-0 with riding time until Longendyke scored a takedown and three back points with under 10 seconds remaining for the 9-0 major decision at heavyweight.

A LOOK AT THE WARRIORS: Ridgewater (1-6 dual record) posted a 0-3 record at the Iowa Junior College Duals on Saturday. Freshmen Thomas Keskey (141 pounds) and John Wittman (heavyweight) lead the team with double-digit wins at 10-15 and 15-12, respectively. Schoen Kichler, the Warriors’ lone sophomore expected to be in Wednesday’s lineup, fell to SJU’s Tait by a 12-8 score in the Johnnies’ 27-21 junior-varsity win on Feb. 7 (2014).
