MCC Region 1 Hall of Fame To Induct six on March 2nd

The Mayo Civic Center Region 1 Wrestling Alumni Hall of Fame will induct six new members on Monday, March 2nd at the Southeastern Minnesota Wrestling Seniors Banquet, at the Downtown Marriot in Rochester.


Joel Viss, a 30-year coach, piloted his Chatfield Gophers to their first Class A State Wrestling Championship in 2014. Viss, who is closing in on his 400th career coaching win, coached the Gophers to a third place finish in 2013. He received back-to-back State Class A Coach of the Year honors as well.


Larry Kihlstadius was an individual state champion for Albert Lea high school in 1975. He earned NCAA Division I All-American honors at Navy in 1979. Selected to The Naval Academy Sports Hall of Fame, Larry was an All Service Pinning Champion and Silver Medalist in the 1982 Freestyle World Military Games. Due to schedule conflicts, Larry will be inducted in 2016.

Chris Nelson was a two-time individual state champion (1986 and 1987) for Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander. He was a two-time NCAA Division I All-American at the University of Nebraska, placing fifth and sixth (1990 and 1992) at 190 pounds. Nelson won a Big 8 Conference title in 1992 and was selected as Conference OW. Chris resides in Gerig, Nebraska and works as a financial planner for Valley Bank & Trust in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.


Tim Shiels was a two-time state entrant for his father Richard “Dick” Shiels at Faribault High School placing as high as fifth. He was an NCAA Division III All-American at Minnesota-Morris. He also coached at St. Olaf College. One of the top NCAA Division I Officials in the nation, Shiels has officiated at 12 Division I National Championships. He has also officiated at several other national tournaments and Region 1AA and MSHSL tournaments as well.


Rick Ties of Rochester was a 1976 high school state runner-up for Lewiston-Altura. He has been a contributor and promoter for the sport for over 35 years in a variety of roles. Events and associations Ties has been involved with include The Clash, Southeastern Minnesota Wrestling Association board member, area youth wrestling, and Director of the Region 1 Senior Banquet. Rick is currently helping son Ricky coach Inner Drive Wrestling Club in Rochester.


Larry Thompson served the Caledonia High School wrestling program for over 20 years as the Head Assistant to Hall of Fame Coaches Leo Simon and Ed Ferkingstad. Thompson was known as the top clinician/technician from the program’s start in 1963. He was instrumental in Caledonia’s one-class Minnesota state championship in 1970.
