Quartet of NDSU Freshmen Wrestlers Take Titles at Ridgewater Open

WILLMAR, Minn. — A quartet of North Dakota State freshmen — Nick O’Brien, Mark Voss, Charley Popp and Tyler McNutt, wrestling unattached, took individual titles at the Ridgewater College Open held Saturday, Jan. 10.

O’Brien (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata H.S.) went 3-0 to take the 133-pound division including a 4-3 decision over Southwest Minnesota State’s Jordan Beihn in the championship match. He defeated Southwest Minnesota State’s Cody Peters 10-4 and tallied a 13-4 major decision over unattached Tyler Tensen. O’Brien improved to 12-4 on the season.

NDSU BisonIn his second tournament of the season, Voss (Monticello, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville H.S.) compiled a 3-0 record to win the 149-pound division including an 11-6 decision over Itasca’s Marcus Riggle in the championship match. He opened with a 13-3 major decision over Ridgewater’s William Saydee and then posted a 9-4 decision over Southwest Minnesota State’s Kurtis Loftis to advance. Voss improved to 4-2 overall.

Popp (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge H.S.) went 4-0 to take the 165-pound division including back-to-back pins over St. Cloud State’s Josh Berg in the semifinals at 2:47 and Southwest Minnesota State’s Colton Vekved at 3:35 in the title match. He won by a 9-1 major decision over Minnesota State Mankato’s Brad Mass and defeated Concordia’s Zach Barber 9-4 to advance. Popp improved to 8-3 this winter.

McNutt (Saint Joseph, Minn./Benton H.S.) compiled a 3-0 record including a pin of Minnesota State Mankato’s Colton Carlson at 1:20 in the championship match. He defeated St. Cloud State’s Austin Rake 7-2 and earned a 12-3 major decision over St. Cloud State’s Tim Moore to advance. McNutt, who also won the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open/White Division), is now 11-7 on the season and has won seven straight matches.

NDSU freshman 285 Adam Freimund (Harvard, Ill./Harvard H.S.), unattached, won two of three matches to place third including a 1-0 decision over Concordia’s Tyler Hoffman, while freshman 149 Blake Carlisle (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake H.S.), unattached, went 2-2 to place fifth. Freshman Alex Stuhl (Prescott, Wis.), unattached, lost a pair of matches in the 149-pound division.

North Dakota State (2-3, 1-0 WWC) is scheduled to wrestle Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, in a Western Wrestling Conference dual at the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.
