#4 St. Cloud State scored 20-12 victory over Minnesota State, Mankato
The #4 St. Cloud State University wrestling team concluded its first weekend of conference action with a big 20-12 victory over downstate rival Minnesota State, Mankato on Saturday, Jan. 24 in St. Cloud, Minn. The Huskies improved to 11-2, 2-0 NSIC on the season with the victory.
MSU started the day with a 3-2 victory at 125-pounds as Da’Wayne Robertson scored a 3-2 decision over SCSU’s Tim Prescott. At 133-pounds, the Huskies gained a 4-3 edge thanks to a 10-2 major decision victory by #7 Mike Rhone over MSU’s Trevor Schultz.
MSU charged back to regain a brief lead at 141-pounds as Alphonso Vruno posted an 8-4 win over SCSU’s Zach Stewart. SCSU then gained the match’s upper hand with four consecutive victories. The roll started with a 10-3 win by #8 Josh Howk at 149-pounds over MSU’s Dylan Herman.
At 157-pounds, #2 Clint Poster pushed his season record to 27-0 with a 3-0 win over MSU’s Adam Cooling. At 165-pounds, #5 Gabe Fogarty continued his winning ways with a huge 7-2 win over #4 Cody Quinn of MSU. This marked the second consecutive weekend that Fogarty has gained a win over a top-ranked opponent at 165-pounds.
At 174-pounds, Clayton Jennissen continued the streak with a 5-3 win in overtime against MSU’s Max Bullock. At 184-pounds, SCSU’s Dylon Braun lost a 4-1 decision against MSU’s Corey Abernathy and at 197-pounds SCSU’s V.J. Giulio posted a 12-4 major decision victory over Scott VanDeLoo of MSU. The day was completed at 285-pounds as SCSU’s Caleb White lost a 5-2 decision against MSU’s Malcolm Allen.
MSU gets back on the mat when they visit #17 Augustana on Thursday. Dual time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
The Huskies will continue their 2014-15 season on Jan. 30 with a 7 p.m. home match at Halenbeck Hall against the University of Mary. On Jan. 31, the Huskies will complete their home weekend with a 2 p.m. match against Minot State University.
