Iowa State vaults into Top 10 after home win against Virginia Tech
Manheim, Pennsylvania — Iowa State’s 21-12 victory over then-No. 6 Virginia Tech on Sunday as part of the Cyclones’ Beauty & The Beast promotion pushed coach Kevin Jackson’s squad into the Top 10 for the first time this season as the USA Today/NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll was released on Tuesday.
The stage is set for Iowa State (6-1) to take on No. 7 Oklahoma State (5-2) next weekend. Iowa (9-0) and Minnesota (9-0) remained at No. 1 and No. 2 after both schools topped then-No. 11 Illinois over the weekend.
The top five remained unchanged with 15-0 Missouri remaining at No. 3, Ohio State (7-3) at No. 4 and Penn State (8-1) at No. 5. Virginia Tech slid three spots to No. 9.
The Big Ten now has 11 teams ranked in the Top 25 after Purdue (8-5) knocked off then-No. 19 Northwestern 22-17. Purdue fell on Sunday to Penn State. West Virginia was the lone team to fall out of the Top 25 this week. One week after making the program’s first appearance in the poll under first-year head coach Sammie Henson, the Mountaineers dropped road duals to Oklahoma State and unranked Oklahoma to fall out of the rankings.
