No. 5 Auggies win 5 in a row to top Pointers
STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Winning the final five bouts of the evening — all by bonus-point margins — the No. 5-ranked Augsburg College wrestling team scored a 32-13 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a dual meet on Friday evening at Berg Gym.
Trailing 13-8 after five bouts, the Auggies, ranked No. 5 in the lastest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III national poll, stormed to the win in their final dual meet of the season, recording a pin, two technical falls and two major decisions for the final margin of victory. With two major-decision wins at the start of the match, all seven Augsburg victories were by bonus-point margins.
Tyrell Martin (SR, Eagan, Minn./Henry Sibley HS) and Tommy Teigen (SR, Ham Lake, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) began the Auggie comeback with major-decision victories, with Martin winning 15-4 at 174 and Teigen winning 13-3 at 184. Martin is now 15-3 overall, while Teigen is now 22-9.
Augsburg’s Donny Longendyke (SO, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), ranked No. 3 at heavyweight, improved to 35-2 on the season with his 17th pin of the season and fourth in his last five matches, a 3:17 match-ender over Bo Seibel. Longendyke, who has now won 27 straight matches, claimed his 16th pin of the season and 27th bonus-point victory (17 pins, two technical falls, eight major decisions).
Top-ranked Augsburg 125-pounder Mike Fuenffinger (SR, Hibbing, Minn.) and No. 7-ranked Matt Hechsel (SR, Apple Valley, Minn.) both scored technical-fall victories for the Auggies — Hechsel with a 15-0, second-period win and Fuenffinger with a 20-4, third-period win.
The defending 125-pound Division III national champion, Fuenffinger improved to 26-1 with his 19th bonus-point win of the season (nine major decisions, four technical falls, six pins). Fuenffinger has now won 24 matches in a row.
Hechsel improved to 24-9 on the season with his 15th bonus-point win of the year (five major decisions, two technical falls, eight pins).
Opening the match at 133, Augsburg’s No. 10-ranked Chad Bartschenfeld (SR, Amery, Wis.) improved to 24-10 with a 10-0 triumph, while Marcus Hamer (SO, Kimball, Minn.) improved to 24-17 with an 11-2, major-decision win at 141.
The Pointers scored wins in three straight bouts to take a 13-8 lead halfway through the match.
Austin Worachek scored a 6:48 pin of Augsburg’s Bryce Zdanovec (FY, Little Chute, Wis.) at 149, Anthony Friese scored a 9-6 win over Gable Frandsen (FY, Ellsworth, Wis.) at 157 and Logan Hermensen claimed a 14-4, major-decision win over Eric Hensel (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) at 165.
