Augustana wrestling downs No. 10 Upper Iowa 25-9 on Thursday night
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Augustana College wrestling won its 11th straight dual with a 25-9 victory over No. 10 Upper Iowa on Thursday night at the Elmen Center. The Vikings took seven of the 10 bouts to improve to 18-4 on the season, 7-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Peacocks’ drop to 11-3 on the year, and a 6-1 mark in the NSIC.
The Peacocks opened the dual in control, winning the 184-pound bout by fifth-ranked Blake Sorensen. No. 5 Jayd Docken secured the Viking victory at the 197-pound match pinning Richard Briggs in 3:30. Michael Lowman battled Logan Hopp in the heavyweight division sending it into the seventh period where Lowman recorded a takedown with seconds to go to win by a score of 4-2.
TJ North showed off his No. 1 ranking in style with a 12-4 major decision over Garrett Wangsness. The Vikings jumped ahead early in the dual against Upper Iowa with a 13-3 lead. At 133, Morgan Engbrecht handled his opponent with a 6-3 decision, followed by Jeremiah Peterson keeping the momentum on Augustana’s side winning a 7-3 decision over Jordan Roths in the 141-pound match.
Faced with the challenge ahead, Shawn Hatlestad dominated the 157-pound bout over fourth-ranked Jordan Rinken. Hatlestad won by a sudden victory of 3-1 to give the Vikings their seventh consecutive bout win and a 25-3 lead.
The Peacocks Colbey Vance (165 pounds) and Dalton Westerlund (174 pounds) both took the final matches to add six more points to their score, but the victory was achieved by a 25-9 margin in favor of Augustana.
The Vikings will close-out regular season hosting No. 1 St. Cloud State on Friday, Feb. 20 in hopes of capturing its second NSIC title. Augustana won the NSIC title in 2010-11.
