MOORHEAD, Minn. —No.6-ranked Concordia celebrated Senior Night in their final home dual match of the 2015 season and five seniors led by example as they all posted wins in the Cobbers’ 47-0 shutout over Southwest Minnesota State.
Jacoby Bergeron, Jake Kostik, Jake Krogstad, Sebastian Gardner and Danny Pike combined to score 24 of the team’s 47 total points in the match. The five seniors capped off their home careers by helping Concordia win its 13th dual match of the season and 43rd in the past four years of competition.
The Cobbers finish the 2015 season with a 13-5 dual-meet record.
Concordia dominated the match with the Mustangs from the opening bout at 125 until the final contested match at 197. The Cobbers earned bonus point wins in seven of the 10 bouts and had three pin falls on the night. The closest match of the night came at 184 when CC was already up 32-0.
Bergeron, who is ranked fifth at 141, started slowly in his match but by the middle of the second period was in control and trying to come up with multiple takedowns for a bonus point win. He wound up winning 11-5 to give CC a 13-0 lead after three matches.
The win was Bergeron’s 20 straight and he pushed his overall record to 31-6 on the year. Bergeron hasn’t lost since Nov. 15 and he is 25-1 since the third tournament of the year.
Kostik followed Bergeron at 149 and proceeded to record a technical fall by stopping his opponent at the 6:21 mark. Kostik repeatedly took his opponent down through the first two periods and then scored multiple near falls in the third to finish off at 18-2. The win put Concordia up 18-0. The victory was Kostik’s 10th of the season.
After Ben Cousins posted a major decision at 157 by being the aggressor in all three periods and coming away with a 14-3 win, a pair of nationally ranked seniors put the match on ice.
Krogstad, who is ranked third at 165 recorded the team’s second pin fall of the night when he put his foe on his back at 6:34. Gardner then toyed with his opponent at 174 and earned an 18-6 major decision. Krogstad has now won nine straight matches and is 18-8 on the season while Gardner is 15-2 in his last 17 matches and moves to 21-6 for the season.
Dane Ringquist came away with the closest decision of the night when he won 5-3 at 184. Ringquist was leading 3-2 with less than 30 seconds remaining in the match when the referee awarded the wrestler from Southwest Minnesota State a point because of stalling tactics by Ringquist. Ringquist then went on the offensive and scored a takedown as time ran out in the third period to get the two-point victory.
Pike finished off the senior sweep in spectacular fashion by getting the third, and final, pin fall of the match. Pike was able to finish off his match at the 4:21 mark and is now 6-9 for the year. It was his third pin fall of the season.
Justice Davis was awarded a win due to a forfeit at 285 after the Mustangs decided to end the match after the bout at 197.
Jakob Stageberg and Gabe Foltz were the other two winners for CC on the night. The pair got the match off in a hurry as they put up 10 team points in the first two bouts. Stageberg started the match with a pin fall at the 3-minute mark in his bout at 125 and then Foltz collected a 10-2 major decision at 133. Stageberg is now 23-10 in his first year of collegiate wrestling and is 9-2 in his last 11 matches. Foltz picks up his 12th win of the year and is now 12-10 and is 7-2 in his last nine matches.
Southwest Minnesota State finished the regular season 8-10 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC. The Mustangs will travel to Mankato, Minn., next weekend for the Super Region 3 tournament.
Concordia will now have a nine-day break to train for the upcoming NCAA West Regional. The Cobbers will participate in the regional on Saturday, Feb. 28 beginning at 9 a.m. at Augsburg College.
