MANKATO, Minn. – At day one of the 2015 NCAA Division II Super Region 3, eight Mavericks are still alive.
#6 Da’Wayne Robertson (Jr., 125 lbs.) had himself a day and advanced to day two with a perfect record of 2-0. He earned MSU an impressive 9.50 team points with a tech fall over Shane Novak (MSU Moorhead), 22-7, and a fall over Malacai Collins (University of Central Missouri), 2:38.
#8 Alphonso Vruno (Jr., 141 lbs.) and #5 Adam Cooling (So., 157 lbs.) ended their day both sitting 2-0. Vruno recorded a fall in his first match at the 2:23 mark over Rafael Lopez. Cooling secured his second win over Dakota Head (Ouachita Baptist) in a match that featured a coach’s challenge by Ouachita Baptist. The official ruled the challenge correct and Ouachita lost one of its three challenges.
#4 Cody Quinn (Sr., 165 lbs.) looks to return to the National Championship for a third time and is off to a 2-0 start. Quinn earned a major decision win in his first bout against Daniel Murakami (MSU Moorhead), 11-2. His second win came by a decision score of 8-1 over Colbey Vance (Upper Iowa). After a decision win of 5-3, Malcolm Allen (Jr., 285 lbs.) grappled to a 4-1 decision win over #8 Ross Janney (McKendree).
Darick Vancura (So., 174 lbs.), Corey Abernathy (Fr., 197 lbs.) and Scott VanDeLoo (Jr., 197 lbs.) suffered losses in the quarterfinals to ranked opponents. Vancura gave up a two point near fall with seconds remaining to lose to #6 Payne Hatter (Ouachita Baptist). Abernathy gave up a fall in 0:24 seconds to #2 Blake Sorensen (Upper Iowa) and VanDeLoo loss by a takedown in over time to #3 Ryan Beltz (Maryville).
Trevor Schultz (So, 133 lbs.) and Dylan Herman (Fr., 149 lbs.) both advanced after losses in their first matches. Herman earned his team leading 15th fall capturing the feat over Trent Williams (McKendree University) in 1:31. Herman and Schultz had their seasons end in the second round of the consolation bracket
The remaining Mavericks move on to day two of action on Sunday at Taylor Center. Doors open for Session 3 at 11:00 a.m. with semifinals starting at noon.
