St. Cloud State wins 4th consecutive NSIC championship

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team (17-2, 8-0 NSIC) captured its fourth consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championship with an exciting 19-12 victory at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Friday, Feb, 20.

The Huskies and Vikings battled back and forth throughout the evening before but the Huskies took advantage of four consecutive wins at the mid-weights to ice the contest for St. Cloud State. SCSU has now scored 36 consecutive NSIC victories dating back to the 2010-11 season.

SCSU HuskiesSCSU opened the match with a loss at 125-pounds before #5 Mike Rhone posted a 12-5 win over Morgan Engbrecht of Augie. The Vikings rallied with a win at 141-pounds, before Larry Bomstad made it 6-3 with a win at 149. The Huskies’ #1 Clint Poster scored a big win at 157-pounds over Shawn Hatlestad of Augie to keep his record perfect this season at 32-0. At 174-pounds, Clayton Jennissen added a win to make the tally 15-6. Augie charged back with a pair of wins at 184-pounds and 197-pounds to make it 15-12.

In the final match of the night #3 Austin Goergen capped the win with a 12-1 major decision at 285-pounds, which made the final 19-12.

The Huskies and Vikings will now continue their 2014-15 seasons with a trip to the NCAA Division II Super 3 Regional at Minnesota State Mankato on Feb. 28 and March 1 in Mankato, Minn.
