Mustang wrestlers head for NCAA championships

MARSHALL, Minn., — Southwest Minnesota State wrestlers Jacob Begin and Cole Wilson both qualified for the 2015 NCAA Division II wrestling championships in St. Louis, Mo., after placing second in the 2015 Super Region 3 tournament on Feb. 28-March 1.

The championships will take place at Chaifetz Arena with Session I starting at 11 a.m. on Friday and Session II starting at 6 p.m. The championship resumes on Saturday, with Session III at 10 a.m., and the finals starting at 7 p.m.

SMSU MustangsAt 174 pounds, senior Jacob Begin (27-5) will open the championship taking on Luke Cramer (18-9) from Ashland University (Ohio), while Cole Wilson (30-5), at 285 pounds will battle Chris Giddens (23-4) from North Carolina-Pembroke.

Begin is making his third straight trip to the NCAA championships as he finished 1-2 at 165 pounds in 2013 and went 1-2 last season at 174 pounds.

Wilson is making his second consecutive trip to the NCAA championships as he finished 1-2 at 285 in 2014 and finished 26-12 a season ago.

The top eight in each class earn NCAA All-American honors. SMSU’s last All-American was Justin Reinsma, who finished seventh in both 2012 and 2013. SMSU has had 10 NCAA All-Americans, including one national champion, since moving to Division II in 1996.

A total of 160 wrestlers qualify for the NCAA championships with four per weight class from the four Super Regionals.
