Two Minnesota State Wrestlers Remain After First Day of Nationals

St. Louis – Minnesota State wrestlers Cody Quinn (Sr., 165 lbs.) and Da’Wayne Robertson (Jr., 125 lbs.) both remain alive at the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Minnesota State sits tied for 18th with Fort Hayes State with a team score of 11.5.

MSU-Mankato MavericksQuinn, a Covington, Wash. native who is rated second in the country, started his final national tournament off with a 5-2 decision win over Tyler Reinhart (Pittsburgh Johnstown) to advance onto the quarterfinals. There, unranked Matt Vandermeer (Lake Erie College) bested Quinn with a 5-0 decision. In the back leg, the two-time All-American earned a major decision over Shelden Struble (Indianapolis) 8-0. He faces JaCobi Jones (Colorado State Pueblo) and has secured at least an eighth-place finish

Robertson, who is rated fourth, started his day similar to Quinn with an 8-7 decision win over Ronzel Darling (Wisconsin-Parkside). The Mesa, Ariz., native lost his next match to #2 Gerald Huff (Adams State), by a 5-2 decision score. He moved onto grapple against #5 Matthew Turek (Gannon) in the consolation bracket and won, 12-9. Robertson starts day two against #3 Willie Bohince (Mercyhurst) and also secured an eighth-place finish.

Alphonso Vruno (Jr., 141 lbs.), who entered the weekend rated eighth, ended his run at the national tournament after posting a 1-2 day. Vruno lost his first match to #2 Maurice Miller (Notre Dame College) in a 7-3 decision. He got his only win by a major decision over Colby Rinehart (Shorter), 12-3, in his second match of the day. The Sandwich, Ill., native had his season ended at the hands of #4 Darren Wynn (McKendree) by a fall at the 4:38 mark.

Action starts back up Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Chaifetz Arena.
