Dennis Kaatz (1946-2015)

Long-time Wadena-Deer Creek wrestling coach Dennis Kaatz lost his battle with cancer on May 8th.

Kaatz is Wadena-Deer Creek’s winningest wrestling coach. He retired in 2005 with a career record of 256-82. Kaatz coached six state champions and 62 state entrants for the Wolverines. He was selected as Class AA State Coach of the Year in 2001. Kaatz was inducted into the MWCA Dave Bartelma Hall of Fame in 2006.

Wadena-Deer Creek advanced to the state tournament as a team under Kaatz in 1992, 2000, 2001 and 2002, earning fifth-place finishes in 1991, 2000 and 2001.

He followed his high school coaching career as an assistant coach at Concordia College in Moorhead, helping to build the Cobber program into a Division III power.
