SCSU’s McPhail honored as Capital One 2014-15 Academic All-America First Team selection

Austin, Texas – St. Cloud State senior wrestler Ben McPhail (Pine Island, Minn.) claimed one of college athletics highest academic honors as he was named to the Capital One 2014-15 Academic All-America® Men’s At-Large First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on June 10.

SCSU HuskiesMcPhail posted a 22-10 record for the 2015 NCAA Division II National Champion Huskies Wrestling team. He is a 2015 recipient of the NSIC Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction Award, given to senior student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher. McPhail is a three-time Academic All-NSIC team member and has earned NWCA academic honors. A community psychology major with a grade point average over 3.9, McPhail earned several team awards in 2014-15. He was honored as a Most Improved Wrestler, a Tough Man of the Year, Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA DII Academic award winner, and a 20-match winner.

Since 2012, St. Cloud State has placed 12 student-athletes (men and women) on an Academic All-America® First Team. Since 1988, 31 Huskies student-athletes have earned first team honors.

To be nominated for this award, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average at their current institution and reached sophomore status in athletic eligibility.
