Maryville is 2015-16 preseason DII favorite

St. Cloud State is ranked 2nd with three #1s

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Maryville University Saints are the preseason favorite in the 2015-16 Division II Wrestling Coaches’ Association Poll, which was released Wednesday.

The Saints picked up 160 points – all eight available first place votes – thanks to nine wrestlers ranked in the top eight of their weight class. 174-pounder Zeb Wahle and 184-pounder Nick Burghardt earned No. 1 individual rankings for Maryville.

Defending national champions St. Cloud State and Nebraska-Kearney are tied for second in the rankings.

Nebraska-Kearney is paced by three top-ranked wrestlers and a total of five ranked individuals. 133-pound national champion Daniel DeShazer, 141-pound All-American Keith Surber and 149-pound All-American Destin McCauley are No. 1 wrestlers for the Lopers.

SCSU is in the top echelon despite only four nationally ranked wrestlers. The Huskies’ contingent features three No. 1 wrestlers though in 125-pound defending champion Tim Prescott, 157-pound All-American Clint Poster and 285-pound national runner-up Austin Goergen.

Mercyhurst has the second-most top eight wrestlers in the preseason poll with eight and is in fourth place, only three points behind UNK and SCSU. Notre Dame rounds out the top five.

Other schools with top-ranked wrestlers are Lake Erie (Matt Vandermeer, 165) and Ashland (Joe Brandt, 197).).
