Mavericks Enter 2015-16 Rated Sixth in the Region

Mankato, Minn. — The Minnesota State wrestling team enters the 2015-16 season rated sixth in the NCAA Super Region 3 Rankings.

Maryville earned the top spot in the poll with 80 points and is followed by St. Cloud State, Augustana, Lindenwood, Central Missouri, Minnesota State, McKendree, Upper Iowa, MSU-Moorhead, Northern State, Southwest Minnesota State, Ouachita Baptist, Truman State, Minot State and the University of Mary.

MSU-Mankato MavericksThree Maverick individuals were ranked in the top five of their respective weight classes including senior Alphonso Vruno (3rd, 141), sophomore Corey Abernathy (3rd, 184) and junior Adam Cooling (4th, 165 lbs.).

Vruno, who earned All-America honors when he finished third in the nation wrestling at 133 as a freshman in 2012-13, owns a career record of 80-32. Abernathy, who finished 2-2 at last year’s NCAA DII Super Region 3 tournament, sported a 17-10 mark as a freshman in 2014-15. Cooling was 3-2 at last year’s NCAA DII Super Region 3 tournament and owns a career record of 42-16.

MSU opens its season Nov. 1 at the Rochester Community & Technical College Tournament in Rochester, Minn.
