St. Cloud, Minn. ~ The No. 2 nationally ranked St. Cloud State wrestling team has recently announced the signing of seven grapplers to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. The program adds Jake Barzowski, Devon Berry, Jr., Kyle Betourne, Devin FitzPatrick, Adam Hedin, Matt Hebel and Collin Kraus to roster for the 2016-17 school year.
“As a coaching staff, we have worked diligently to fill in the gaps of specific weight class needs and skill levels,” explained assistant wrestling coach Brady Wilson. “We are excited to have the opportunity to work with such a special group of young men.”
Barzowski, hails from Park Ridge, Ill. and attends Notre Dame High School. He is a 2015 IHSA 3A State Qualifier at 138-pounds. Barzowski is a multiple time freestyle state place winner and was the 2015 State Freestyle Champion at 138-pounds. He was a 2013 Pre-Season Nationals All-American finishing second at 126-pounds. Barzowski has been ranked as high as #14 by USA Wrestling Magazine this season. Barzowski has a career mark of 87-20 going into his senior campaign. He is the son of Ed and Joey Barzowski.
Berry, a tri-sport athlete for Hampton High School, has been a two-time area champion in wrestling. He also excels in football and track & field and has earned letters in all three sports throughout his high school career. Berry begins his senior season with a career record of 100-25. A standout in the classroom, Berry is an honors student that intends to pursue a broadcast journalism degree at SCSU. He is the son of Tonja Grier Ames and Devon Berry, Sr.
Betourne hails from Bourbonnais, Ill. where he attends Bishop McNamara High School. He is a three-time IHSA 1A state place winner. He won the 2014 State Championship at 170-pounds as a sophomore and finished the season 28-0. Betourne placed third in the state as a freshman and took second at the state meet as a junior. He was the 2013 USA Wrestling Pre-Season National Champion at 170-pounds. Betourne had an impressive 6-0 mark at the 2015 NWCA/USAW National Scholastic Duals and is currently ranked #9 by intermatwrestling.com, #10 by Win Magazine and #13 by USA Wrestling Magazine at 182-pounds as he begins his senior season. Overall, Betourne has an impressive cumulative mark of 97-11 in his high school career. He is the son of Kevin and Georgette Betourne.
FitzPatrick attends Mahtomedi High School where he has been a two-time MSHSL Class AA state place winner. He placed fourth in 2014 at 138-pounds with a 36-6 record and second in 2015 at 152-pounds with a 34-3 mark. FitzPatrick is a four-time MSHSL state qualifier. In addition, he is a 2015 JJ Classic Champion at 160-pounds. FitzPatrick currently has a 140-36 career record heading into his senior campaign. He is the son of Brian and Heidi FitzPatrick.
Hedin, who is a current senior at Rosemount High School, is a three-time MSHSL state qualifier and two-time state place winner on the mat. He placed fourth in 2014 at 132-pounds with a 41-6 record. Hedin was 45-0 in 2015 in claiming the state title at 132 pounds. He is also a two-time USA Wrestling Pre-Season All-American and a three-time Rumble on the Red place winner. Hedin won the 138-pound Rumble on the Red Championship in 2015. Hedin is currently ranked #12 by USA Wrestling Magazine and has a career record of 162-33. He is the son of Chris Hedin and Kristine Nogosek.
Hebel, a Broomfield, Colorado native that attends Legacy High School, will join the Huskies after finishing fourth in the 2015 CHSAA 5A State Championships at 182-pounds with a 40-9 record. He was a 2015 Region Champion and placed third at the prestigious Rocky Mountain Nationals at 182-pounds. In addition, Hebel has a career high school mark of 95-40 heading into his senior campaign. He is the son of Deon and Rosemary Hebel.
Kraus, a current senior at Stoughton High School, will join the Huskies in the fall of 2016. He is a three-time WIAA Division I state place winner. Kraus finished third as a freshman and junior and captured the 2014 state title as a sophomore at 126-pounds. He was a 2014 USA Wrestling Cadet Freestyle All-American at 138-pounds after finishing in eighth place. Kraus is currently ranked #16 by Wrestling USA Magazine and has an overall record of 149-17 for his career. He is the son of Ben Kraus and Todd and Nicole Aaberg.
“This is a great start for the wrestling recruiting season,” said assistant wrestling coach Aaron Konitzer. “As a staff, we wanted to bring in a class that we felt could help us immediately. I feel that we have a handful of student-athletes capable of doing just that.”
St. Cloud State, the defending NCAA Division II champion, is currently ranked second nationally. The program has also been crowned as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) champion in each of the last four seasons.
The Huskies continue their 2015-16 season with a trip Collegeville on Tuesday, November 24 for a 7 p.m. showdown with Saint John’s.
