MITCHELL, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State wrestling team opened up the regular season with a 40-6 dominating performance against Dakota Wesleyan on Friday night.
Antonio Meikel started the scoring for the Mustangs at 133 pounds with a forfeit before Trent Butcher continued the scoring at 141 with a pin at 3:46.
SMSU would take the next four bouts as Cortez Arredondo recorded a pin at 5:13 in the 149-pound bout followed by an 8-5 decision from Patrick Kelley at 157 pounds to give the Mustangs a 21-3 lead at the halfway mark.
Colton Vekved added points at 165 with a tech. fall and Griffin Osing recorded his first win at 174 with a tight 8-7 decision to push the Mustang lead to 29-3.
DWU took the 184-pound bout, but SMSU bounced back with another tech. fall at 197 pounds from Ashton Bartlett beforeCole Wilson shut the dual down with a pin at :14 and gave SMSU a 40-6 win.
SMSU will compete at the Dakota Wesleyan Open tomorrow starting at 9 a.m.
