#2 St. Cloud State wrestling opens season with win at SJU
The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (1-0, 0-0 NSIC) opened its 2015-16 dual meet season with a big 45-3 victory at St. John’s University (0-2) on Tuesday, Nov. 24, in Collegeville, Minn.
The Huskies charted opened with a pair of pins at 125-pounds by Brett Velasquez and at 133-pounds by Jarred Oftedahl to gain a 12-0 lead in the match. Travis Swanson lost a close 8-6 OT decision at 141-pounds before the Huskies rolled to seven consecutive wins to gain the big win.
At 149-pounds, Jay Hildreth scored an 8-7 decision over Mike Pleski and SCSU’s Travis Holt posted a pin over Branden Schorr at 157-pounds. #1 ranked Clint Poster continued the winning trend with a tech fall at 165-pounds and SCSU’s Clayton Jennissen gained a major decision win over Muqkadeen Poole at 174-pounds.
At 184-pounds, Garrett Miller scored a 4-3 decision against Luke Dodd and SCSU teammate V.J. Giulio added a pin over Glenn Castro at 197-pounds. To complete the night, #1 ranked Austin Goergen notched a pin at :40 against SJU’s Nick Pegelow. Complete results of the dual match are listed below.
The Johnnies return to action against another Division II opponent, MSU-Moorhead, for a dual at 7 p.m. next Wednesday, Dec. 2, in Sexton Arena.
Next up for the Huskies is a dual match at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.
