Virginia Rolls Late to Defeat North Dakota State 25-14

FARGO, N.D. – The University of Virginia rolled to wins in the final three matches as the Cavaliers defeated North Dakota State University 25-14 in a non-conference dual Friday, Nov.6, before 376 spectators in the Bentson Bunker Fieldhouse.

North Dakota State returns to host the 45th annual Bison Open at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Fargodome.

NDSU BisonThings started on a positive note as the match started at 184-pounds where NDSU senior Hayden Zillmer (Crosby, Minn.) opened with a 20-7 major decision over Will Schany. The sixth-ranked Zillmer improved to 5-0 on the season on a pair of pins and three major decisions.

Zillmer’s win was one of three in the opening four weight classes. Newcomer, junior college transfer Ben Tynan (Kennewick, Wash.) came back from a 5-2 deficit at 285-pounds to post a 7-5 sudden victory-1 overtime win over Pat Gillen. Tynan is now 4-2.

North Dakota State’s 125-pound junior Josh Rodriguez (Guadalupe, Calif.) posted an 8-0 major decision shutout over Joe Martinez on the strength of a 4-point nearfall in the second period. The 17th-ranked Rodriguez has won five of six to open the season.

NDSU’s other win came at 149 pounds as sophomore Mitch Bengtson (St. Cloud, Minn.) outlasted TJ Miller for a 7-5 sudden victory-1 overtime win. Bengtson improved to 5-2 on the season.
