BISMARCK, N.D. — Concordia showed no ill effects of its 11-day holiday break as they rolled to a pair of dual-meet wins at the University of Mary Triangular.
The Cobbers won all 10 individual matches in their 52-0 rout over Jamestown and then won seven of the first eight against the host Marauders and beat Mary 29-9.
The two wins push Concordia’s season-long win streak to three matches. CC is now 3-0 on the year and has outscored its opponents by a combined total of 97-24.
Success came early and often against the Jimmies. The Cobbers scored bonus point wins in nine of the 10 individual bouts. Ty Johnson (149), Nick Gravdahl (165), Dane Ringquist (174) and Tyler Hoffman (285) put up pin fall wins for Concordia. Gabe Foltz had a technical fall victory in his match at 133 while Ben Cousins (157) and Hunter SantAmour (197) recorded major decision wins while Aaron Dick and Adam Presler were awarded forfeit victories.
The second match started with the same theme as Concordia won the first four bouts to take a 16-0 lead against the University of Mary.
Sophomore Jakob Stageberg recorded his team-leading 14th win of the year when he scored an 11-1 major decision at 125. Foltz then took the mat and came away with a 6-2 decision which was followed by a 5-4 decision from Presler at 141 and then a pin fall from Johnson at 149.
Joe Heinz, Ringquist and Briggs put the match out of reach as they combined for 10 team points and gave CC a commanding 29-3 lead with two bouts to go.
Heinz scored a 9-7 decision in overtime. Ringquist recorded his second pin fall of the day when he put his opponent’s shoulders on the mat at the 2:20 mark. Briggs earned his second victory of the afternoon with a 9-1 major decision at 197.
BETTER WITH AGE
Concordia went 2-0 against the same teams in a triangular meet held at Jamestown. The Cobbers outscored the Jimmies and Marauders 79-15 in 2014. The 64-point margin was bettered in 2015 as CC held a 72-point total margin of victory.
GIVE THEM A CHANCE
Like 2014, the Cobbers used several freshmen in the two duals. In 2014, head coach Matt Nagel gave seven first-year wrestlers the chance to compete on the dual-meet stage. On Wednesday, Nagel sent three freshmen to the mat but all but two wrestlers used in the two duals were either freshmen or sophomores.
FRESHMAN, SOPHOMORE COMBO PART DEAUX
The two CC wrestlers to post pin falls in both their matches came from the freshman and sophomore classes. First year athlete Ty Johnson scored a pin in his first match at just 46 seconds and then posted his second pin at the 3-minute mark. Dane Ringquist used 1:51 against Jamestown and then 2;20 vs. Mary to record his two pins
The Cobbers will look to continue their dual-meet success when they compete in the Candlewood Suites Duals Meet. The meet will be hosted by No.5-ranked Wis.-La Crosse and start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5.
