Vruno Propels Mavericks to Victory After Slow Start
BISMARCK, N.D. — After starting the dual down 7-0, the Minnesota State wrestling team (1-0, 1-0 NSIC) won seven straight matches to defeat the University of Mary by a final score of 33-10 to pick up its first conference victory of the season.
Alphonso Vruno (Sr., 141 lbs., 7-3) got the ball rolling for the Mavericks, picking up a huge win against the sixth ranked wrestler at 141 pounds in Division II, Rudy Guillen, by major decision, 13-4. The Mavericks at that point trailed 7-4 before Dylan Herman (So., 149 lbs., 6-6) picked up a quick pin against Reed Cronin in 1:10 to give Minnesota State a 10-7 lead that it would not surrender for the rest of the night.
From there, it was smooth sailing as the Mavericks won by tech fall in four of the next five matches. Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs., 5-0), Adam Cooling (Jr., 174 lbs., 13-2), Scott VanDeLoo (Sr., 184 lbs., 8-0) and Darick Vancura (Jr., 197 lbs., 3-6) all won by tech fall, earning 20 team points. Corey Abernathy (So., 165 lbs., 1-0) also won his first match of the year by a 5-0 decision over Paul Michaelson.
Team-wise, the Mavericks finished 7-3 in their matches on the night.
MSU will now head up to Minot, N.D., where it will square off against the Minot State Beavers tomorrow night. The dual is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
