Mavericks Crush St. John’s 40-3 in First Dual of the Week
MANKATO, MINN — The Mavericks (5-2, 3-0) went nearly perfect on Thursday, winning nine out of their 10 matches to defeat the Johnnies of St. John’s by a final score of 40-3.
Trevor Schultz (Jr., 125 lbs.) started the night on the right foot for the Mavericks, as he defeated Ben Kollaja by technical fall, 17-2, to give Minnesota State a 5-0 lead. After dropping the team’s only match of the night at 133 pounds, Alphonso Vruno (Sr., 141 lbs.) kept the winning ways going, where he defeated #7 in Division III Ben Henle 10-5.
Daniel Close (Fr., 149 lbs.) continued his stellar freshman season with an 18-0 technical fall over Branden Schorr. #2 Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs.) remained undefeated and moved to 14-0 after a fall in 3:11 over Adam Sutlef. Brad Maas (Sr., 165 lbs.) picked up a solid 7-1 decision over Jack Borsody.
Max Bullock (Jr., 174 lbs.) competed in his first dual of the season, where came out on top over Teddy Erickson by a 4-3 final score. Bullock was down 3-1 with seconds remaining, before a two-point nearfall as time expired along with riding time helped him pick up the clutch win. #8 Scott VanDeLoo (Sr., 184 lbs.) improved to 13-1 after a fall over Glenn Castro in 5:50.
Darick Vancura (Jr., 197 lbs.) picked up his third victory via fall in four duals this season, as he secured the fall over Nick Pegelow in a quick 26 seconds. Malcolm Allen (R-Sr., 285 lbs.) finished the night for the Mavericks with a win, as he defeated Colin Fisher by a 5-4 decision.
Minnesota State returns to action on Saturday, where they will compete in a triangle dual with St. Olaf and UW-Oshkosh in Taylor Center. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and all teams will be wrestling against each other.
